Ironically, boxing gloves are seen by many to be one of the prime reasons for boxing deaths/brain damage/etc.

Logic being that punching someone in the head with a bare fist really smashes your hand up good, and in the 'bare knuckle' days, most shots were to the body and not the head, for that very reason.
