House Wall/Construction? Help

Ok so I have to pay/fix the hole that I punched in the walll on the first floor of my house. I was wondering exactly what I needed to do it.

All I can tell is that it had a thin layer of wood/paint plaster(?)

What would you normally do, It needs something to cover the hole, and then something to hold it on like glue? Then I plan on painting over it...
 
cut the hole into a square, then cut inch all the way around the hole. only cut through the paint texture and the paper of the dry wall. Then get a piece of dry wall cut it into a square one inch bigger then the hole. cut the backside one inch all the way around (removing the drywall but leaving the paper
 
so the drywall will fill the hole and the paper part hanging over will fill the paper part you cut around the original hole.


ah fuck call a handyman, this is what you get for making fun of the kids who took shop in high school
