Going back to College, need some help guys

Ok ok, first for all of you who I used to piss off, or act stupid on here a few years ago, that was then. This is now, I'm being real here. Kura... if you're going to post something here, please try and help me out. I don't know what we had in the past, but thats then. On to my post.......

I'm thinking of going back to school. Been 6 years since I graduated HS. I plan on possibly going to a community college, and then to a state university. There are a lot of degrees out there. Before I get ahead, I was thinking of going to ITT Tech. I wanted to do the networking AS degree, and then information security systems for my BS. I did some research and found that ITT Tech pretty much "sucked".

There's a lot of you guys in the IT field, so I want some in depth knowledge on whats better, Tech School or goto a real university. If I go the latter, what major/degree should I go for? I want something that'll pay decent getting outta school, and even while iN school. (min 45-50K outta school). I know the IT field is pretty much dead from what I've heard now, but hey, theres really nothing else to do. I was also thinking of doing the auto route, going to UTI (Universal Technical Institute) and becoming ASE certiifed or something, or doing collission work.... but I dunno, I'm kinda much at a loss right now on what to do. Any suggestions?

University>Tech school

IT is so saturated it's not even funny. A true University degree looks way better. Even then it is still pretty hard to find a good spot unless you get a hook up. The reality is you will probably have to start a crappy job when you graduate and work yourself up like everyone else. The degree will just make it easier to get in the door for a moderately good gig. The real kick ass jobs are probably going to come from someone you know, or a continuation or offer from something you interned in or something along those lines.

fb> No, thats a real long story I dont wanna get into again.

Anyway, since the IT field is dead, and if YOU were going back to school what major would you choose/

I was a Management Information Systems major, but since the IT Field is shrinking (and I hated the work) I switched to History.

What should you do? Definitely go to a University, but you should study something you really love.

In the computer realm, how about like game designer, engineering, things like that?

Would you really want to design games for whiny little bitches who complain about every little fucking thing that doesn't go their way?

It will work out great if you don't really care though and are just in it for the dollars.

What Id like to do is IT, lke security... but again with the IT field shrinking & going oversears, I dont see that happening. I love doing car work, autobody/mechanic/customizing type deal... but thats just a tech cert not a real degree... gosh its so hard!

WTF w/ the IT field is dead? Jesus. There are tons of decent IT jobs out there you idiot. My first advice - you don't need a fucking school to learn how to do something useful with computers. The diploma can help you out a lot as far as your resume goes and open some doors but you can learn all sorts of good shit w/o a school.

My honest recommendation is to go to a two year school to get a degree for refrigeration/heating or electric circuits. Whereas IT is a rather volatile field, cooling/heating specialists and electricians will always be needed, not to mention that either is a rewarding and high paying field.

Two year schools are as good as the people in them. If you're driven and you want to learn the skills they're teaching, they're a great option. If you're a dumb slacker, you'll graduate but you won't be hireable.

IT is dead? What?

Starting salaries in CS, EE, and IT are up for 2005.

Computer support and software engineering jobs are predicted to be 2 of the 10 fastest growing jobs through 2012.

Also, hiring is up 13% overall this year.

I don't know where the "conventional wisdom" that the IT industry was dead came from, because it's pretty stupid. Whatever, it just makes it easier for the rest of us to get jobs.

The difference between now and the 90s is, in the 90s employers would come to you, now you have to send resumes out yourself. Like every other field.

they are probably talking about ITT Tech's verion of "IT"

you really need to decide what you want to do

how technical would you like your job to be, how much room do you want to give yourself for promotion, etc

Also, be careful about the whole "I want to make computer games" additude.. Most people that say this are slightly unrealistic... not many people in the IT field do this, and they don't get paid much anyway
(many of them are grunts, computer programmers not computer scientists).

Depending on how much school you want to go through, people are doing very well for themselves getting an undergrad degree in CS and then trying to get a masters in a less technical field.

If you want $$ you would due well to focus your technical expertise on something that is useful to businesses as a whole. Database Management and Data security are two of the things they are very interested in. (I don't mean ITT Tech's versions of these things, I mean theory and real understanding)

thx for motivation!

I'm in IT now as a contractor for one of 4 Campbell Soup plants in the US

I plan on moving away this august and starting my degree in that full area, but have always been scared I will not get on anywhere besides campbells :|
