It is a function of transmission rate and how fast it kills. In other words, the faster it kills, the less deadly it actually is. Ebola has significant ramifications for the entire planet. Right now, it's killing fast. If it ever mutated into longer incubation periods, it would be a pandemic. People need to stop fucking with it.

Chances of a mutation increase exponentially the more people it infects. Also has a higher chance of meeting another virus it likes.
the only reason influenza kills off 500,000 a year is because something has to take out the old and weak, why not influenza.

Exactly, if you understand the tipping point theory and power laws, you will understand how incredibly dangerous ebola is. Speed of which it kills is sensational in the media, but it is what makes it a contained virus. Fatality rates only matter if speed is reduced. I certainly don't have the courage to join a missionary in Liberia, but if you do, limit it to that region.
