Dungeon Defender, how to play it to have fun?

I want to like this game, but I always find it either super easy and thus boring, or too hard.
How can I get more fun out of it?
I actually played a game with Tycho from PA, apparently he got a custom skin, I wouldn't even have noticed otherwise. That game too was super easy/boring.
Anyone play this or is this 2011?
 
I haven't played it since around Haloween the year it came out. Steam says I played for like 136 hours or something, but I'm sure the game is a lot different now, so I can't help.
 
Its fun playing with a group of friends on harder difficulties and getting your ass kicked until you figure out better strategies.

So on insane the first few waves are hard? Followed by such a setup that you just have to plow through the other waves?
Oh well I got it as part of the humble bundle. It sounds like the game is mainly catering to the item collectors. Do they never offer any PVP?
