converting h264 to avi

i have security footage of my roommate nearly setting my house on fire today, its of all of what happened outside when fire and police came, my dvr saved it as h264 and i cant find a program that works for the life of me to convert it to avi in a playable format, anyone have something that will work?

my oven was on fire
security cameras caught the action outside
help me convert it

im trying to convert it. i can play it using the dvr's software but i have no way to make it avi

My vid editing software is crashing....running some other programs I cannot shut off until they are done.

Ill upload in morning after I get it converted if you don't have a solution by then.

avi is a name for a codecless file format iirc

you should be trying to convert to a certain avi format
