Before the holidays probably. If you need one sooner rather than later, get a BB. You can put programs on it, although it's not great program wise. A huge reason the treos crash is because they are underpowered because palm is a cheap company, but the advent of sexier phones has forced them to make the next treos pretty damn beefy, so crashing shouldnt be an issue unless its huge.
I have a treo 700 and with loaded programs, I have to reset it multiple times daily. It only has 32 megs of ram, so it runs ok if I ran it default, but where is the fun in that? You get to the point where you figure out what combination of programs works well, and you figure out how to work around that. The bb is nice because it works and its simple, but it limits you a lot more in terms of what you can do; of course it's gonna run 'better' when there is less you can do.
Try em out. I can honestly see someone switching back and forth each generation/end of contract.
