Audiophiles... What is "Tone Defeat"

I just purchased a new Alpine car stereo, and it has the option for "Defeat" On/Off, in looking around, I can only assume it means Tone Defeat... can anyone shed some light on what this means in layman's terms?

Some stuff I got back from google, I dont quite understand what it really means.

"a tone-defeat switch to shorten signal paths"
"the tone defeat completely bypasses the tone control circuits"

The question is what benefits would I gain / lose from using this option?
 
basically it's a "pure audio" mode that bypasses all the treble/bass controls that are normally adjustable in the system. in short, it "defeats" all the optional "tone" controls available to you, should you choose to engage this feature.

it's kinda pointless in car audio though since it's not possible to get really good sound. :/
 
as for benefits, in home stereo applications it's great if you have full range speakers and you wish to send a full range signal to each. this removes most (if not all) of the processing done to your audio signal for a purer, cleaner sound. but if your goal is the best possible audio reproduction, you should never have any of those shitty tone controls activated to begin with.
