and now for the quotes

September 4 – October 9 (8 different films)

Many films have pushed the boundaries of what's acceptable to show and say on screen, but few have gone as far as the movies in this series. These are eight of the most controversial films ever made. Some, like Ichi the Killer, Irreversible, Salo, and Cannibal Holocaust, are guilty of the standard complaint -- excessive sex and violence. Others, like Triumph of the Will, September 11, and The Birth of a Nation, have been condemned on ideological grounds – for promoting fascism, anti-Americanism, racism. Why show these films? Well, for three good reasons. First, most of these movies are by great (Leni Riefenstahl, Pier Paolo Pasolini, D.W. Griffith) or gifted (Walerian Borowczyk, Takashi Miike, Gaspar Noe) filmmakers. Second, they expose repellent aspects of real life that should not be ignored by the rest of us. The suppression of The Birth of a Nation, for instance, denies young people an opportunity to see just how shockingly racist attitudes were in 1915. Finally, because it is a part of human nature to want to "top" everything that has gone before, the inclination toward excess and outrage has plagued cinema throughout its history. Sensation sells tickets. And it is a trend that is not going to go away, since three of the eight films were made within the past two years. Please note that no one under 18 will be admitted to any of the films in this series aside from Triumph of the Will, September 11, and The Birth of a Nation. But even adult viewers should not attend casually.

Free lighted parking is available in the adjacent CIA lot, located just north of the building off of East Blvd. Entrance to the building at night is through the rear door, just off the parking lot and only steps from your car.

Admission to most screenings is $7, or $11-$12 for two films a night. Cinematheque members pay $4-$5 per film; CIA students, faculty and staff pay $4-$5.
