SWAT 4: familiar dev responses

I read this interview regarding Swat 4 which is another game Irrational is working on. When you read the review you'll note some of the question responses are similiar to ones for tribes vengeance during its development. By the way SWAT 4 uses The Tribes Vengeance engine

Q: How did you develop new gameplay aspects? Did you take much gamer input from the last games?

A: We have made sure to review the notes and reviews from the previous SWAT titles and have listened to user and press feedback during our Beta tests. We even brought people in for focus tests and watch them play as we sit behind a two way mirror. Across the board we have worked on improving all aspects of the gameplay.

For example, one of the things we found that many gamers complained about was the interface in SWAT 3. SWAT 3 was a great game but the command interface with all of the hotkey commands was not very user friendly. Based on this feedback, Irrational created an easy to use Graphic Command Interface that is context sensitive and works with the a single key stoke or mouse click. We also learned that diehard SWAT3 fans really liked the old interface so there is still an option to use the classic SWAT 3 hotkey method.


Wish they paid attention and kept the old binding system from Tribes.


Q: What kinds of development expectations did you feel coming from the previous games in the series?

A: The biggest expectation was making sure to deliver a game that fans of the series would feel paid respect to the roots of the series while still opening the door for players new to the SWAT series to come in. Pressure? What pressure? *gulp*

Sound familiar. Poor SWAT veterans.

By the way the Boston office is making Swat.

On a positive note they have done some impressive stuff graphically to the TV engine looking at some of the screen shots.

Heh you mean following through and delivering what your "audience" wants, not some random gamer you plug in a seat and say, "hey play this game".

The game is poor imho. I don't know wtf they got those screenshots from, but the beta mp looks NOTHING like that. It looks likes UT..........the original. :(

What exactly sets SWAT apart from the multitude of groundhugging "tactical shooters" that have been flooding the game world for so many years?

i may be mistaken but i think the comparison here didn't have anything to do with overdone crap genres sucking or not. (i'm with you, though)
 
Well, simply its better than a groundhugger shooter because your swat, this means there are more options (arresting anyone) More weaponry (groundhugger shooters have a somewhat limited armament). VIP mode makes it awesome, swat tries to escort vip to exit, suspects have to stun the VIP, cuff him and defend him for 2 mins, he CAN move while cuffed so you have to keep him stunned, the police then needs to rescue him, if swat kills the VIP they lose, if suspects kill the vip before the timelimit they lose.

It is very immersive and fun with the amount you can have, from busting doors open with a c2 charge to closing them with a wedge and looking under them with an optiwand its all fun, the weapons are great and have a purpose, there are 2 ammo types which are totally different (one does more damage, the other shoots thru walls and body armor). You can zoom and it isnt iron sight style (iron sights are stupid) The gameplay isnt spammy and each weapon is different not to mention due to ammot ypes there are about 2 times the amount of weapons. A truly amazing creation.
