Public opinion? What do you know of public opinion have you done a survey? You've relied on survey done by Ziomedia, who has a dog in this fight.

I checked one page of Google results, all the 'public opinion' surveys are done by Ziomedia. the Washington Post (3 articles for your Federales to read), NY Times, Boston Globe, NBC, Yahoo and CNN all doing hit pieces. Not a lot of different viewpoints being expressed, certainly none that support the Hammonds et al.

There were re-tried under terrorist statutes (lol) now doing 5 years of jail time for burning a little scrub, and this trivial little fact isn't mentioned in three articles I read. It's fascinating seeing how the media filters news and creates the narrative.
