Online poker

I don't play online poker, so I am not positive how it works...

But couldn't software be written to automatically calculate the best statistical move? Also, is card counting not possible for some reason in online poker, does card counting not effect poker... or what?

Just curious.

There is software that will show the exact odds of your hand against other hands and the pot odds and such. I think one such program is called "Poker Pal" or something.

I'm not sure what you mean by card counting but there is only one deck in play and that deck is reshuffled every game/hand.

In poker each hand is a freshly shuffled deck. Card counting has to do with games like black jack where you use the same deck for a considerable amount of time.

poker also has a lot to do with reading the other players. a program is not going to be able to do that, at least not very accurately.

(its highly probably that I don't quite understand what card counting is)

What I do know, is that it happens in a game of chance played in casinoes with a deck or decks of cards, and that it is strictly against the rules. I just assumed it had to do with poker, but there are a lot of different games and ways to play poker

that settles the card counting then... but in online poker everything you see can be seen by a computer, and probably better.

(I'm assuming by 'reading the player' you are doing a statistical analysis in your head based on how the player has been playing his hands previously, a computer could see this, and over time read it more accurately than you could, where as in real life you can read physical attributes of the player)

you're an idiot
no, you're the idiot to think you can control the cards and what randomly comes out.

go watch Rounders again and masturbate while thinking it's all about 'skill'

there is definitely "luck" involved but to say there isn't a certain amount of skill in the game is just wrong!

sensing weakness and bluffing does take some skill but a lot of poker is luck, especially when played online against people who don't know what they are doing.

well ya, i guess i can agree with you on that, but lets call it a 95-5 luck/skill and we'll definately agree.

i would go so far as to say 40% luck, 60% skill in REAL LIFE poker, at least.

the luck comes from the fact that yeah, god knows how the cards will REALLY fall... but then on the other side of the spectrum, the best players know how to play the odds and vote correctly to maximize profits and minimize loss, and how to read people really, really, really well.

If there was that much luck then there would be no professional poker players.

no kidding. The next time there is a 5 A K flop and I have the AK and I bet heavy preflop/flop/turn and this dumb ass that had a 3 5 in his hand catches a 5 on the river... I swear to god I am going to yank that DSL line out of my wall.

 i am more than POSITIVE you have witnessed the MOST AMAZING flops EVER via online poker. I am with you on this and it is truly luck.

Sorry sar, I think you're completely wrong.

There is a lot of luck involved, but to say the game is only 5% skill, well that's just wrong. There's a lot more skill involved than that.

That's saying the knowledge of pot odds, implied odds, reverse implied odds, expected value and everything else only accounts for 5%?

C'mon you know better. Sounds like you got rivered or something. :p

HEAR HEAR!

What scares me is when the pots are for real, you still run into jackasses doing that.

Those are the players that make poker profitible for the people that know what they're doing.
