Software developers worried about the Wii

Submitted by: DudeofDeath @ 01:39 PM | Thursday, October 11, 2007 | (url: http://uk.wii.ign...)

IGN reports on a recent article from The Nikkei Business Daily. After speaking to a number of software houses on the future of the Wii, The Business Daily reveals that several developers, preferring to stay anonymous, expressed concerns over the longevity of the system, and were hesitant to develop games in the event of the Wii's popularity dropping suddenly.

Longevity? In the consumer electronics market? What are they smoking?

This sounds like something Sony would say. Or perhaps these guys just bought into the 10 year life cycle crap for the PS3.

yeah big fucking deal. This is a true problem and people can't just keep their eyes shut forever. I say hoorah for mentioning the fad fear.

Lets face it. The Wii has very little to offer right now. There aren't any spectacular games for the hardcore gamer. EA has a great football game but where's the hockey? where's the baseball? Where's the soccer?

Where's the fighting game? The racing game? the RPG? (lets face it. Metroid and Zelda are adventure games like mario and not an RPG).

I love the Wii. I love everything it stands for in terms of direction and convenience. The machine is well-built and sleek. The features (WiFi, backwards compatibility, Wii24, etc) are nice considering the price.

The only thing i dont like about the machine is the menu. God the channel system is horrible.

I like all that but I never touch the damn thing. Not to surf the net, vote, read the news or check the weather. Not to game for extended periods of time. Nothing.

I will admit that the system is in it's infancy but still yet it offers me very little. I'm the power-gamer. The competitor. I like to play against people and I like skill to be the deciding factor.

My only hope. The only game that I can see myself playing for hours and hours against others and not want to pull out my hair or go play on the PC is Smash Brothers. Sigh. It's become my holy grail.

Sounds something along the lines of Viral tactics from Sony.

Give me a break Anguish. The average lifespan of a console the way Sony/MS are developing is down to 4 years. That's barely time for a 3rd generation of games. The Wii is being marketed as a casual gaming machine anyway. Smash Brothers Brawl qualifies as a fighting game. Mario Kart classifies as a racing game. More developers are putting money into the Wii because they underestimated what it's initial success would be. That's why there are not many games for it.

The Wii really is a great system - not comparable to 360/PS3/PC obviously though. Look at the PS2, xbox, and gamecube: They all had fantastic games! What's with the Wii? 4 or 5 very good games, two of which are on older systems. Pathetic. It's not that the system doesn't have the ability for good games considering many of last generations masterpieces. It's that software developers are retarded and lazy, and waited WAAYY too long to start thinking about the Wii. Now every game coming out is crappy and quickly made. I want to know if anyone at all is taking the console seriously and actually spending time to make a game for it, other than Nintendo itself.

I'm not saying the Wii is a bad system. I'm just saying it's time to get worried. The games released have been pathetic. None of them utilize many of the Wii's features. 24Connect? So far it's sent annoying spam. Mii's? No one is using it. The friggin thing isn't even available for third parties to use.

Half the games don't even incorporate the motion sensing in an enjoyable way. What the hell was up with SSX? The feel of movement was great! They had to make it really dumb with the uber gesture system though. Just made the game feel stupid.

Red Steel? Holy hell that game had horrible controls! Turning and shooting was fustration.

I'm not sure I even like the controls on Zelda. The Gamecube controls seemed more responsive and active.

It isn't being implied right for many games and that really kills the mood.

No doubt these "developers" are Sony's PR people.

It's been less than a year. PS3 doesn't have any more "good" titles than the Wii. The 360 didn't have anything for a year either. Systems are always slow, short of a few titles, the first year of release. Couple that with developers being caught with their pants down on the Wii's popularity, and it's not surprising that there are few games for it. If by next Christmas the same situation is happening, I will fully agree with your sentiments.

I wouldn't call the wii a failure until it stops selling so goddamn much.

I want a Wii. I need smash bros :o

Wii can't be looked at the same as the PS3/360. I'd still consider them "competition", but not on the same level. The PS3/360 is for the hardcore games, but tries to be fore casual as well. The Wii is for casual gamers, but tries to be for the hardcore gamers.

A good Wii game is "really fun".
A good 360 game is "really awesome".
A good PS3 game is...I'll edit this once they make one.

My Wii is cool and all, but it's no hardcore gaming system. I have a ton of fun with it, but I still want a 360. Part of that is the lack of Wii games, hopefully future releases (Smash Bros., Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, etc) help with that.
