Characters that aren't likable are fine to a certain degree but the audience needs someone they can root for. In BSG Apollo filled that role.

He was pretty much the stereotypical good guy. I don't really see how you could dislike him aside from the fact that he was boring. Oh, I guess he got fat once and was a little mean to his wife .

the SG1 characters were entertaining but static and predictable. its what keeps the series around #5 on my list. the medieval town, planet canada thing every other episode didnt help either. with that said the series excelled in the writing department.

B5 remains #1. though firefly would be if it werent cancelled and the western crossover (likely why it was cancelled).
