uh.. yeah, i don't think you're ready to get a top secret clearance if you have those questions.

You can't buy one yourself, you have to be sponsored by a company that's cleared.

You have to have a reason to get one... 'I want to find a job that may require a TS' isn't a good enough reason.

the company will either sponsor you or they won't

you can't get one w/o the company going through the paperwork and paying for all the expenses

Plus, even if you didn't need a sponsor - you wouldn't be able to afford a TS Clearance.

iirc, once you dont work there anymore, you lose it

buddy of mine just got his because he's a dod (or maybe d of state) contractor in afghanistan

I used to be "bonded" so that I could enter the premises of Amgen and Rockwell Research and fix computers. It gave me higher clearance access than the normal Joe, but dunno what "Secret!" level it would equate to.

Seem to remember filling out some forms and then my company paid a fee. Waited a week or so for background checks and that was about it.

Its not just whether you work there, it's whether you're using it or not.

for example, you could get a TS, but if you're going to go 6 months without working on classified stuff you get deactivated.

If you leave the company you 'lose' it, but i think its more like a deactivation. You can get it up and running quickly once you have a need for it again.

How quickly depends on how much has changed/how long since you had an active clearance.

probably secret, and the few weeks thing is a temp clearance - which will work until the investigation is completed or until they find something worth revoking it.

It should take a week or two (sometimes a day or two) to get your temp clearance. If not then they've found somethinga nd you'll have to wait for the 8 month investigation (roughly 8 months)

took my buddy almost a year, he's doing the same thing. he goes to whatever ****hole we're currently occupying when they need him

by the way, all the info i posted - its based on where you are.

different areas work with different agencies/departments of the DoD and homelandsecurity.

we have one office where everything's quick and easy. we have another where it takes super long and anoying to go through. depends on who answers the phone when you call
