Easiest way to gain a few FPS - Warhammer Forums

Cliffs:

Start playing a video in Windows Media Player, then pause and minimize it.
Start playing WAR.

From the reading it seems this was discovered to work in many games and some have reported it to be significant in WAR too. It has to do with something WMP does on startup to modify the I/O prioritization. Appearantly MS discovered this as well and made it a change in Vista so that it always runs.

I've read this about other games in the past, but never needed to try it.

I might try this along with the new nVidia drivers tonight.

I remember doing that AOC and not really noticing any improvement . Haven't tried it with war though.

The new drivers from nvidia and degragging my hdd seemed to help war though.

I actually forgot to ever test it myself. I updated the nVidia drivers and did the war.exe profile association in the nVidia control panel and the results were fine, so I didn't need any other tweaks.

After tinkering around for a while, I have fixed all of my stuttering issues.

1. Uninstall your current nVidia display drivers.

2. Install the newest drivers from nVidia's official site (178.13).

3. Go into your nVidia control panel. Make sure you're using the "advanced view."

4. Manage 3D Settings --> Program Settings (it's a tab) --> Add --> Navigate to the WAR.exe file and choose it

5. Turn up AF to 16X, turn up AA to whatever your video card can usually handle.

If you're using a LCD screen, turn vsync on and turn triple buffering on (if you're using a CRT, turn both of these off).

6. Keep the texture filtering quality setting at performance.

Note: If you see some shimmering in-game and you don't like it, turn the texture filtering quality setting to high quality.

7. Set Negative LOD Bias to clamp.

8. Go into your in-game settings.

For moderate/low end GPU, click on balanced. Uncheck lightmaps and specular lighting.

For high end GPU's, keep everything on high quality, but turn off lightmaps and specular lighting, and keep shadows on balanced.

This fixed all of the stuttering for me, now the game runs smooth as silk at around 75 FPS with 16XAF and 16XQAA.

I was fiddling with these settings, using your suggestions as a guide and then tested them in game in the warcamp I was in by looking towards the busiest scene (tents, objects and NPC in view). I think I added maybe 10-20 FPS. Looking out into the open RVR world tops out the framerate at 60-75fps.

I then ran WMP into the background on pause and I "think" it may have ironed out a few caching/loading hitches.

you know a game has ****ty optimization when people are finding these random ass loopholes to get around the horrid performance and hitching

The point is, we shouldn't have to do ANY of this **** to make the game run on your system that is 10x better than the recommended specs (e8400, 6gb ram, and gtx 280 here for example....get 10 fps in keeps, and the random 20 fps drop hitches, etc)

We'll see if the improvements help where it counts in large scale RVR.

Hell i'm running a 2.8ghz dual core, 2gb ram, and 7800gtx and i'm getting really nice framerates after doing a video driver uninstall/sweep/install of the new drivers followed up by the program settings tweaks.

I'm sure in time the framerate issues will get ironed out.
