This is why I don't believe the whole "we're peacekeeping and fighting nazi's" any more than I do "Putin is Hitler and wants to restart the Soviet Union and the cold war" narratives.

Salt of the Earth people really aren't all that motivated to kill other salt of the Earth people without good reason. So you generally have to make things beyond black and white and resort to exaggerations. Hence, you're not just killing "other people", those people are "Hitler". You're not just risking your lives and the lives of your children for oil & gas or control over an economic zone, you are liberating a land from tyranny. We support the Ukrainians killing Russians over there, so we don't have to kill Russians over here.

The part that gives "peacekeeping denazification" some credence is the fact that after the revolution, millions of easterners were left trapped in a regime they never approved of or voted for. Word is that they've been under heavy pressure both politically and militarily, and that the escalation of violence against them was broad and ruthless. I think this is an easy sell for the Russians, even if its only 50% true.
