So say I have one computer, install all the updates, install all the programs I want. How do I create a clone of a Windows XP setup?

So basically I installed everything I want, what program would I use to make an iso image of the current setup so I can easily pop it into another computer and install that same setup with everything the way it is on the first computer (user accounts, etc)

I hear of Norton Ghost, is that any good for something like this?

Norton ghost. Takes 10-15 to ghost a machine (give or take depending on software loaded).

And you can setup a switch and ghost as many as you want at the same time.

I am guessing you had experience with it? Like it?

Is it possible for me to save it as an iso or an image in which I could put on a flashdrive? Would ghost be able to use the image on my flashdrive to bring the new computer up to speed?

Clone's of similar machines will work.. if you have computers with different hardware you're gonna run into trouble.

Make sure you use SYSPREP and run that before you clone to the image will regenerate SID's.

Ghost will work, Acronis will also work.

Yeah wasn't thinking's.

I recommend setting a "ghost" computer that you can swap drives in and out of. Use Acronis/Ghost to restore the image to the drives..

Ah I see how it works.

So setting the ghost computer I will have to just swap the hd's and do the process.

NewSID

Fixes the hostname problem and the Security Identifier issue with cloned PC's. Sysprep will solve it on the front-end (and less work overall), NewSID will solve it on the tail-end (on each PC.)

yeah, norton ghost. i just started using it.

i also have it set up to make a backup of my work folders once a week. should set it for more often though.

Definately, If the computer is new enough you can make the computer boot off of the flash drive and use that to install.

Make sure if you are going to do it through a network, the host and client PCs have to be plugged into the same switch/hub if not the client wont be able to see the host. Pretty annoying seeing as how you have to move the PC whenever you want to ghost it (atleast if you have a big building and many switches).
