We currently use Backup Exec, without the BMR / System Recovery option. I don't relish the idea of reinstalling / manually restoring files (both time- and effort-wise), so I've been looking into bare-metal recovery / image restoral software to reduce the time required, the effort involved, and the opportunities to **** it up along the way.

I searched around here for threads on disk imaging, backup, etc. and looked into a couple of the options mentioned. BE's System Recovery option and Acronis' True Image seem to fit the bill. Unfortunately, both are a lot more expensive that I anticipated ($600/machine for BMR, $700+/machine for True Image). Additionally, there seems to be a lot of overlap in functionality between True Image and BE, and I would rather not pay extra for features already provided by BE.

All I really want is image restoral. Doesn't necessarily have to allow for restoral to dissimilar hardware. Are there other [good / less expensive] options?

I guess there's also the really cheap solution: dd system disk on nightly cron...just make sure you catch it before the primary disk starts throwing out errors, or else you have a chance of dding a corrupt image.

It doesn't have to be "really cheap", but $700/server seems overkill, when I think that's around what we paid for BE to start with.

VM's and blades work pretty sweet for that.. My guess is it'll cost more to implement blades than it would to add the option in BE or purchase TI.

The quote I got from Acronis to cover all our machines was a bit over $8k.

What's the difference between BE's BMR and IDR? We use IDR here, and it's pretty slick. Update the IDR images occasionally (major OS or hardware changes). When you need to do a recovery- throw it in, boot from cd, answer a couple questions, it installs OS, then restores everything from your media server. I think it's pretty slick.

We use CommVault at my shop. I know they offer some BMR solutions and they were cheaper than Backup Exec when we implemented last year.

if $700 is a steep solution I don't know why anyone would throw out the 'scrap your servers and buy new ones(blades)' idea. Sounds silly, but maybe I'm missing something.

Virtualization seems like the answer. image your current servers into a virtual machine, then backup the store every night or whenever. I think all the software you need is free now, and it even solves the problem of changing hardware which you don't seem to care about.

check out somethingawful's IT forum, they have a virtualization megathread that will answer all of your questions and more.

keep your head on straight though, as you're reading you will be convinced that virtualization is the second coming of christ.

It is, but don't be all faggy about it.
