It's a writing habit I've had since I was young. If I feel like a sentence has too many commas in it, I tend to throw in a semi-colon to make it look a bit less comma'd. Half of the time it ends up being a correct usage anyway, and the truth is, the vast majority of people don't know how to use them either and seeing a semi-colon looks right academic to them.
