ESPN appears to be jumping on the bandwagon now:

Quote:
For the first time, ESPN will take its popular daily news program to the World Cup with two on-site sets and three host anchors offering live and tape-delayed coverage from South Africa in 2010. The undertaking will be more similar in scale to how the network uses ***8220;SportsCenter***8221; at the Super Bowl as opposed to how it uses remote sets at an event like the recent Belmont Stakes.

***8220;It will be fired up day, night, at all hours to serve the needs of [ESPN***8217;s] family of networks,***8221; said Jed Drake, ESPN senior vice president and executive producer, event production. ***8220;We are giving it everything we can to make it special.***8221;

The move is just one in a series of program changes ESPN is making to its World Cup coverage in 2010, the first of two World Cups it is paying a combined $100 million to broadcast. The network also will film behind-the-scenes features on the people, culture, places and athletes in South Africa and offer the same type of lead-ins and lead-outs for games that it airs during ***8220;Monday Night Football.***8221;

The changes underscore the importance the network is placing on the event in South Africa. ESPN identified the World Cup as one of its three corporate priorities this year. In years past, the only other productions to make that list were ***8220;SportsCenter***8221; and the NBA.

***8220;We***8217;re looking at it as the premiere opportunity for the company to become immersed in a premiere global event,***8221; said Scott Guglielmino, ESPN vice president of programming.

The centerpiece of that immersion will be two ***8220;SportsCenter***8221; sets that will contribute to ***8220;SportsCenter***8221; broadcasts in 14 countries throughout the monthlong World Cup, broadcasting in eight languages.

ESPN also holds World Cup rights in several Asian countries through ESPN Star Sports, as well as in Brazil.

The U.S., the most important market in the ESPN family, will use one of the sets for World Cup reports, including a nightly ***8220;World Cup Live***8221; show. ESPN will have three anchor hosts and four reporters, who will follow teams and file reports from South Africa. One reporter likely will be assigned to the U.S. team in the same way ESPN reporter Ed Werder is assigned to the Dallas Cowboys. The group will collectively contribute to the majority of ESPN***8217;s planned 45 hours of studio coverage of the World Cup.

ESPN will round out that ***8220;SportsCenter***8221; coverage with features on the culture, people and continent of Africa. A crew will visit the country in advance of the World Cup to film features that have an ***8220;Olympic feel,***8221; Drake said.

The network also sent its ***8220;Monday Night Football***8221; production team to South Africa during this week***8217;s Confederations Cup to collect footage of everything from safari ranges to behind-the-scenes shots of players preparing for games in their locker rooms. That footage will be spliced into segments leading into and out of broadcasts of the World Cup games.

ESPN hasn***8217;t made any decisions about announcers and analysts for games, but executives said that it planned to handle the 2010 World Cup more like its telecasts of the Euro 2008 tournament than of the 2006 World Cup. For the Euros, it used Sky Sports commentator and Brit Andy Gray, whereas for the 2006 World Cup it used American Dave O***8217;Brien.

The entire plan ***8212; from ***8220;SportsCenter***8221; to its announcers ***8212; guarantees a dramatically different approach to the 2010 World Cup than what ESPN did in Germany in 2006. That year, the network sublicensed the rights from Soccer United Marketing. In 2010, it will own them and it is treating the event accordingly.

***8220;We are hitting [South Africa] hard,***8221; Drake said. ***8220;You will see coverage that, when it***8217;s all said and done, will not only represent the event well but will capture the unique character and culture and people of this magnificent place.***8221;

In addition, ESPN are broadcasting a bunch of pre-season friendlies being played in the US this season

ESPN
7/24 AC Milan vs Chelsea
8/09 MLS vs TBD (believed to be the Toronto - Real Madrid friendly)

All on ESPN 2:
7/18 Chelsea vs Seattle Sounders FC
7/19 Club America vs Inter Milan
7/21 Chelsea vs Inter Milan
7/22 AC Milan vs Club America
7/26 AC Milan vs Inter Milan
7/26 Chelsea vs Club America
7/29 Everton vs. MLS All-Stars
8/05 Barcelona vs. Seattle Sounders FC

Barcelona is also apparently playing the Galaxy at the Rose Bowl, the real Chivas in San Fran, and Madrid is playing DC United

overnight ratings for the Confed cup match have it at 2.7 which would make it the fourth highest rated US match on ESPN

top major markets:

1. Miami-Fort Lauderdale
2. Las Vegas
3. New York
4. West Palm Beach
5. Hartford-New Haven
6. Atlanta
7. Richmond
8. Washington, D.C.
9. San Francisco
10. San Diego

Typical English performance in the final, completely lacking in heart and always picking the wrong players.

The obvious 2nd keeper is on the bench who's had more caps and experience at this level, and going into a major tournament with 2 strikers is ridiculous as its obvious Walcott is not a lone striker. I can't honestly think of a team in my lifetime who's gone into a tournament with 2 strikers.

cubans aren't really soccer fans though

plus you guys had a MLS team and blew it years ago AND you had the world charity soccer event a couple weeks ago.

I also could swear there was some friendly that was going to be played at the FIU field but I can't seem to recall when or what it was

Neither can anywhere in the south east

STL should get a club next expansion period, but they should have had a USL club all along

If only we could get ESPN to cover the EPL here in the US

Coverage of the sport still blows here. Fox Soccer Channel is horrible to watch. The picture is super blurry and jumpy. Plus, all they ever cover is terrible games. Nobody needs to see ManU blast some soon-to-be relegated chumps.

Anyway, KC has an MLS team! I was crammed on a Southwest flight with the entire team earlier this year. Nothing but the best for the MLS players

Does everyone get that strange phone dial sequence while watching FSC every 30 minutes?

we have a USL PDL team (St. Louis Lions) im actually co-workers with one of their staff

the problem with STL's MLS bid is they want to put the stadium in Illinois and traffic to go see a game will turn off 95% of fans (as well as the stadium being way outside of st louis)

certainly sounds like a **** plan

couldn't be any worse than the plan suggested by some to locate an Atlanta MLS team up in Gwinnett - 30 miles north east of the city would basically eliminate roughly 1/2-3/4s of the atlanta population from being willing to go

Oh, also for a brief preview of the attendance next month (hopefully), the Mexico - Venezuela match drew over 50k at the Dome

Beeboopbeeebooobooop

Yeah... I hate that channel.

Not to mention the choppiness of the picture. When the keeper kicks the ball long, it looks like a PC game with crappy framerate skipping along.

they want to put st louis' team in collinsville, il which (aside from the nightmare bridge traffic in crossing the river) is about 15 miles outside of st louis city itself. since no one actually lives in the city it's an even further drive to any sporting event. the plan sucks and i hope that if we do get an MLS team that they dont go that route or the franchise will fail

15 miles is roughly how far the current silverbacks stadium is outside of downtown Atlanta - it's right at the I-85 and I-285 junction.

The vast majority of people live outside of the I-285 Atlanta bypass loop (at best, 1/3 of the atlanta metro area population live within that 15 mile ring)
