Kotaku - Valve Responds To Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott, Vows Support For Original - Valve

"Doing a sequel in one year is new for Valve. But providing ongoing support for our titles after the initial launch isn't - it has been part of our philosophy since Half-Life was released ten and half years ago," said Valve president Gabe Newell in a statement to Kotaku. "We see no reason to change that and will continue to support the over three million customers in the L4D community."

"E3 is a trade event where developers and publishers come to announce new games for the coming year. L4D2 — like any new product — requires an appearance at the show," Newell said.

Valve says, it will continue to support the original with continued updates.

"Some in the community are concerned that the announcement of L4D2 implied a change in our plans for L4D1. We aren't changing our plans for L4D1."

Whether that will allay fears that Left 4 Dead will be left behind by some community members remains to be seen, but Valve notes that it hasn't abandoned the original.

"In addition to the recently released Survival Pack, we are releasing authoring tools for Mod makers, community matchmaking, 4x4 matchmaking, and more new content during the coming months for L4D1," Newell says. "We also agree with our customers that there needs to be an interoperability plan for players of L4D1 and L4D2, as multiplayer games are driven by the cohesiveness of their community."

I still think it's pretty lame that it's a new game on the exact same engine with a few new weapons/enemies.

I'll believe it when I see them release MM2.0, fix the numerous bugs that are STILL in the game, and release the authoring stuff.

could have been so much better.

it'd be cool if they fixed the bullshit match making on 360 and also killed off anyone under the age of 20 who played

if you could mod l4d from the beginning like you can cs:s, then there would be no reason to buy l4d2.

yes/no?

Thats not really much of a response, nothing is said about the actual future of L4D nor their reasoning, beyond the cash, for rushing a sequel.

First popular mods to come out after the sdk is released.
-fire ammo
-charger zombie
-silenced gun that dosent do shit.

Tbh, most of this shit dosn't seem that hard to imitate... More melee weapons that do different damage?

yea, that was what i was thinking. they're just reskinning the players and weapons and a few other things and want to release it as a whole new game.

the mod community should be able to do the exact same thing. make some new maps and skins.

I meant it the other way around... long day.

L4D2 maps to L4D.

They are built in the same sdk so I don't think it will take long.

the concern is that in order to keep playing with ppl that actually play a game, we'll be forced to buy a moderate upgrade to the current one, not that they're stop supporting the game everyone will have moved on from due to the sequel with additional content

I still think the moding community will take everything from L4D2 and port it back to 1. Hell there is a good chance the only reason they didn't get the SDK out sooner is because they knew some one in the community would make the same damn changes in a mod they are making in 2.
