Cops launch investigation into 2018 'trip-and-fall' death of South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh's housekeeper - one week after his failed attempt to arrange his own murder

SLED announced Wednesday it is investigating the death of Gloria Satterfield and the handling of her estate
Satterfield, 57, was the Murdaugh housekeeper for around 25 years before she died February 2018 after a fall
No autopsy was carried out, her death was not reported to the coroner and the cause was listed as 'natural'
Alex Murdaugh settled a wrongful death claim with her family in 2018 but they say he hasn't paid a cent
Satterfield is the third mystery death connected to the Murdaugh family: Paul was awaiting trial for the 2019 boating death of Mallory Beach, 19, while the SLED reopened the case into the 2015 death of Stephen Smith
Murdaugh's wife Maggie and son Paul were shot dead back at the family hunting lodge on June 7
On September 4, Murdaugh was shot in the head but survived and checked himself into rehab days later
He resigned from his law firm as it emerged he was being investigated for allegedly misappropriating millions
Cops said Tuesday Murdaugh had paid a former client to kill him so his surviving son Buster could collect a $10 million life insurance payment

Police have launched a criminal investigation into the 2018 'trip-and-fall' death of Alex Murdaugh's housekeeper - one day after investigators said the legal scion had paid a hitman to kill him in a botched assisted suicide scheme following the double murder of his wife and son.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced Wednesday it is now investigating the 2018 death of Gloria Satterfield and the subsequent handling of her estate.

Satterfield, 57, had been the Murdaugh housekeeper and nanny for around 25 years when she suffered a fatal brain injury following a mystery fall inside the Murdaugh family home. She died several weeks later on February 26, 2018.

SLED said that hit had opened a criminal investigation inter Satterfield's death based on a request from the Hampton County Coroner, as well as 'information gathered during the course of our other ongoing investigations involving Alex Murdaugh.'

Murdaugh settled a wrongful death claim with the housekeepers family for $500,000 in 2018.

However, Satterfield's family sued Murdaugh, Wednesday claiming he had not paid out 'one single dime' of the settlement.

This is what happens when you are a pastor and touch other people's kids inappropriately.

https://www.fox13news.com/news/oklah...top-police-say

Quote:
OKLAHOMA CITY - A father in Oklahoma City tackled a local pastor who was seen inappropriately touching his son at a bus stop, leaving the suspect with a cracked skull and a bloody mugshot.

"There’s hardly any words that are camera appropriate," witness Lisa Ward said of the incident. "It’s just sickening."

Oklahoma City Police arrested the suspect, Michael Coghill, on Wednesday, after he was recorded on camera touching a nine-year-old boy at a bus stop and was confronted by the boy’s father, according to News9. The police department, however, could not confirm to Fox News that the boy's father was the one to confront the suspect due to the Open Records Act.

Local residents said that Coghill is a local pastor in the area.

The boy told police that Coghill would often jog near the bus stop and had stopped by the area on more than one occasion, according to the police report obtained by Fox News.

The boy said Coghill had visited the bus stop on Monday and touched him in a way that made him uncomfortable. The boy also told his parents about the incident on Monday, and the father accompanied the boy to the bus stop on Wednesday, according to local reports.

"He knew the time he would be there every day," Ward told News9 of Coghill. "That was the hardest part, the most disgusting part."

The victim’s father sat in his car waiting to see if Coghill would make an appearance and touch the child inappropriately. As the boy made his way to the stop, Coghill stopped his jog and approached the boy, according to the police report.

"While he was watching the school bus stop, our suspect ran by him, ran past the bus stop where the children were waiting. Turned around, came back and stopped where he touched the child," Sgt. Dillon Quirk with the Oklahoma City Police Department said.

Coghill was seen placing his hand on the child’s side, before he moved his hand to the backside of the boy. The father recorded the incident, which was given to police, and proceeded to tackle Coghill.

Coghill's skull was fractured and his orbital socket cracked on the left side of his face.

"He was in the cop car all bloody," Ward added.

Coghill is a pastor at Lakehoma Church of Christ, which issued a statement condemning the abuse.

"We were heartbroken to learn of the incident involving one of our adult ministers, and our hearts go out to the child and family involved. We were shocked at this news as he had a clean background check, and we have received no reports or claims against him during his tenure. Church leadership has no tolerance for any type of abuse and is meeting tonight to discuss next steps. We will cooperate with authorities as needed," the statement said, according to News9.

Coghill is currently being held in Oklahoma County Detention Center on a count of lewd acts to a child.

A museum says they gave an artist $84,000 in cash to use in artwork. He delivered blank canvases and titled them "Take the Money and Run." - CBS News

Quote:
A Danish artist was given $84,000 by a museum to use in a work of art. When he delivered the piece he was supposed to make, it was not as promised. Instead, the artist, Jens Haaning, gave the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art in Aalborg, Denmark two blank canvases and said they were titled "Take the Money and Run."

Haaning was asked to recreate two of his previous works: 2010's "An Average Danish Annual Income" and "An Average Austrian Annual Income," first exhibited in 2007. Both used actual cash to show the average incomes of the two countries, according to a news release from the artist.

In addition to compensation for the work, Haaning was also give bank notes to use in the work, museum director Lasse Andersson told CBS News via email. Their contract even stated the museum would give Haaning an additional 6,000 euros to update the work, if needed, Andersson said. At the time the works were initially exhibited, the Danish piece highlighted the average income of 328,000 kroner, approximately $37,800, while the average Austrian salary illustrated was around ***8364;25,000, or $29,000.

For the "Work it Out" exhibit at the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art, Haaning was meant to fill frames with money. But they were empty. Jens Haaning

"We also have a contract that the money $84,000 US dollars to be displayed in the work is not Jens' and that it must be paid back when the exhibition closes on 16 January 2022," Andersson said.

"The exhibition is called 'Work it Out' and features works of art by many different contemporary artists," he said, adding that the exhibition It runs from September 24 to January 16, 2022.

Andersson said when they spoke to the artist about making the piece earlier this year, he agreed to the contract and "he indicated a fairly easy job."

But when it came time for Haaning to actually deliver, he did the unexpected.

"The curator received an email in which Jens Haaning wrote that he had made a new piece of art work and changed the work title into 'Take the Money and Run,'" Andersson said. "Subsequently, we could ascertain that the money had not been put into the work."

Indeed, the frames meant to be filled with cash were empty.

"The staff was very surprised when they opened the crates. I was abroad when the crates were opened, but suddenly received a lot of mails," Andersson said.

When he finally saw "Take the Money and Run," Andersson said he actually laughed. "Jens is known for his conceptual and activistic art with a humoristic touch. And he gave us that ***8211; but also a bit of a wake up call as everyone know wonders were did the money go," he said.

According to Haaning's press release, "the idea behind was to show how salaries can be used to measure the value of work and to show national differences within the European Union. But by changing the title of the work to "Take the Money and Run" Haaning "questions artists' rights and their working conditions in order to establish more equitable norms within the art industry."

"Everyone would like to have more money and, in our society, work industries are valued differently," Haaning said in a statement. "The artwork is essentially about the working conditions of artists. It is a statement saying that we also have the responsibility of questioning the structures that we are part of. And if these structures are completely unreasonable, we must break with them. It can be your marriage, your work - it can be any type of societal structure".

Andersson said while it wasn't what they had agreed on in the contract, the museum got new and interesting art. "When it comes to the amount of $84,000, he hasn't broke any contract yet as the initial contract says we will have the money back on January 16th 2022."

The museum director said they'll wait and see what Haaning does, but if the money is not returned on January 16, "we will of course take the necessary steps to ensure that Jens Haaning complies with his contract."

He said they are in contact with Haaning, who he called a "well-respected and well-known artist in Denmark." But they have yet to reach an agreement.

Michigan man found dead with winning lottery ticket: report | Fox News

Quote:
The body of a 57-year-old Michigan man was found washed up on a beach in Huron County Friday morning with a winning lottery ticket tucked away in his wallet, according to a report.

Gregory Jarvis won $45,000 while playing "The Jack" at the Blue Water Inn in Caseville earlier this month, according to ABC12.com. He returned to the place a few days later and was reportedly in good spirits. He bought rounds for patrons even though he was unable to cash his ticket due to an issue with his Social Security card.

He was not seen alive again.

Kyle Romzek, the Caseville police chief, told the station that the discovery of the lotto ticket prompted his officers to take another look at the case, but the theory is that Jarvis was tying up his boat when he somehow lost his footing and hit his head, "and that***8217;s where he ended up in the water."

"No foul play suspected," he told the outlet. An autopsy stood up the theory and said he drowned, the report said. The station reported that his relatives will be able to collect the winnings.

Gun manufacturer Smith Wesson moving headquarters, some production from Springfield to Tennessee - masslive.com

Quote:
SPRINGFIELD ***8212; Smith & Wesson is moving its headquarters and significant elements of its operations to Maryville, Tennessee, in 2023 ***8212; partly in response to a proposed state law that would ban it from making assault-style weapons and certain handguns here.

The company will retain 1,000 jobs and metal cutting and precision manufacturing operations at its 2100 Roosevelt Ave. plant in Springfield. The company will lay off 550 local workers.

The announcement coincided with a drop in Smith & Wesson stock, SWBI on the Nasdaq composite index. It closed Thursday at $20.76 a share, down 73 cents or 3.40% on the day.

***8220;This has been an extremely difficult and emotional decision for us, but after an exhaustive and thorough analysis, for the continued health and strength of our iconic company, we feel that we have been left with no other alternative,***8221; said Mark Smith, president and CEO, in a statement on Thursday.

He specifically cited legislation proposed by Springfield state Rep. Bud Williams and others that, if enacted, would prohibit the company from manufacturing certain firearms in the state that are banned for sale here. That list includes military-style rifles with high capacities and some handguns. The law was proposed in response to mass shootings.

In April, Williams and other backers said they did not anticipate the legislation would cause Smith & Wesson to pull out of the state.

***8220;These bills would prevent Smith & Wesson from manufacturing firearms that are legal in almost every state in America and that are safely used by tens of millions of law-abiding citizens every day exercising their Constitutional 2nd Amendment rights, protecting themselves and their families, and enjoying the shooting sports,***8221; Smith said.

***8220;While we are hopeful that this arbitrary and damaging legislation will be defeated in this session, these products made up over 60% of our revenue last year, and the unfortunate likelihood that such restrictions would be raised again led to a review of the best path forward for Smith & Wesson,***8221; Smith said.

Mark Oliva, a spokesman for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, also pointed a finger toward Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey and her predecessors, who maintain lists of firearms that are banned from sale in the state because of magazine capacity or other features deemed unsafe.

***8220;I think it***8217;s important that they be able to sell to any law-abiding citizen,***8221; Oliva said. ***8220;I think it***8217;s a decision by Smith & Wesson that in part was made because they are seeking a better business climate but also because they were seeking a more welcoming environment, one that is more respectful of the industry and the contributions that it makes.***8221;

Williams said Thursday that banning assault weapons manufacturing in Massachusetts is still the right thing to do.

***8220;I***8217;ll have to see what their reasoning is,***8221; Williams said. ***8220;But we stand by our commitment to take the assault weapons out of play.***8221;

Williams added, ***8220;They are moving their headquarters. That***8217;s what corporate does. We are trying to save lives. I would like to know how many corporate people live in Springfield.***8221;

Springfield Mayor Domenic J. Sarno called Smith & Wesson***8217;s decision ***8220;devastating news to the 550 employees and their families who will be losing their jobs.***8221;

***8221;My number one priority will be to assist these employees and their families in any way we possibly can,***8221; Sarno said. ***8220;I will be working with my staff and coordinating with state officials to discuss ways in which we can offer workforce placement assistance and/or retraining aspects to assist every one of these employees and their families.***8221;

He added, ***8220;In addition, we will continue to work with Smith & Wesson to retain the 1,000 remaining jobs here in Springfield.***8221;

The company said it does not plan to move any manufacturing equipment from Springfield. Smith & Wesson will also close facilities in Connecticut and Missouri as part of consolidating in Tennessee.

The Blount County Commission in Tennessee passed a resolution in 2019 declaring the county, which includes Maryville, a ***8220;2nd Amendment Sanctuary.***8221;

Earlier this year, Troy Industries, an 18-year-old manufacturer of gun parts and shooting accessories, announced it will move its headquarters and manufacturing from West Springfield to Tennessee, citing the ***8220;changing climate***8221; for firearms manufacturers in Massachusetts. Tennessee paid for that investment, giving the West Springfield company a $750,000 grant.

Gun industry lobbying group The National Shooting Sports Foundation called it a ***8220;migration,***8221; citing moves like Troy***8217;s relocation to Tennessee and companies leaving New York state and Connecticut.

***8220;The strong support we have received from the state of Tennessee and the entire leadership of Blount County throughout this process, combined with the quality of life, outdoor lifestyle, and low cost of living in the Greater Knoxville area has left no doubt that Tennessee is the ideal location for Smith & Wesson***8217;s new headquarters,***8221; Smith said Thursday. ***8220;We would like to specifically thank Gov. (William) Lee for his decisive contributions and the entire state legislature for their unwavering support of the 2nd Amendment and for creating a welcoming, business friendly environment.***8221;

U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, D-Springfield, called the move ***8220;disappointing***8221; and pointed to Smith & Wesson***8217;s long history in the city.

***8220;The relationship between Smith & Wesson and Springfield predates the Civil War. Since 1852, they have been an anchor in our community providing solid employment opportunities to residents of this area for generations,***8221; said Neal, chairman of the House Committee on Ways and Means. ***8220;While the loss of jobs is discouraging to our region, I am heartened that some will remain. I look forward to continuing our relationship with the company as it undergoes this transfiguration.***8221;

Richard K. Sullivan, president and CEO of the Economic Development Council of Western Massachusetts, said any loss of jobs has a ripple effect through the economy. On the good side, skilled manufacturing workers are in high demand and should be able to find other jobs in the area.

But the loss of the headquarters, here since 1853, will hurt.

***8220;You lose a lot there,***8221; Sullivan said. ***8220;It***8217;s not the building. It***8217;s the talent that is in the headquarters. It***8217;s the CEO, the vice presidents, the executives. They live in the communities. They shop in the communities, they lend their time and talent to organizations that make up the fabric of Western Massachusetts.***8221;

State. Sen. Eric Lesser, D-Longmeadow, said his focus is those who will lose jobs.

***8220;Regardless of one***8217;s personal views on gun control, this move is bad news for the hundreds of families who will lose stable, well-paying jobs,***8221; Lesser said. ***8220;Looking forward, I***8217;ve already begun conversations with relevant public and private sector leaders about suitable reuse of the space and ways to assist the 550 impacted employees through training, job placement, and other means. It is my hope that the location remains vibrant and in keeping with the proud manufacturing tradition of our region.***8221;

Sarno said employers were already mobilizing to find jobs for the displaced workers. The mayor said MassHire Springfield Career Center executive director David Cruise has offered to help coordinate this process. Meanwhile, Keith Campbell, an executive at DFF Corp. in Agawam, offered to help with a job fair.

***8220;I was impressed to hear that (DFF has) been expanding exponentially and have hired over 190 new employees in the last 18 months, just terrific,***8221; Sarno said.

Campbell, in a separate interview, said he***8217;s proud of adding those 195 employees, growing by a factor of four in the last year and a half. DFF is in the civilian aerospace market and makes medical and diagnostic devices and semiconductor parts used material handling and logistics.

***8220;A lot of that growth (in employees) has come from other companies in the aerospace and in the armament industries that have gotten really hurt during COVID,***8221; Campbell said. ***8220;We need skilled labor of this quality.***8221;

He said he***8217;s hired workers recently who previously had been with Smith & Wesson.

***8220;It just seems to fit,***8221; he said.

Bill Would Allow Lawsuits By Illinoisans Against Gun Manufacturers, Dealers - NewsBreak

Illinois State
Bill Would Allow Lawsuits By Illinoisans Against Gun Manufacturers, Dealers

A proposed bill would allow Illinoisans to sue gun manufacturers, importers, and dealers whose guns are used to cause injury or death in the state. The Protecting Heartbeats Act was introduced yesterday in the state House of Representatives. It is modeled after a controversial Texas abortion bill, which allows citizens to sue others who aid or perform an abortion. Democrats in the legislature are standing behind the bill.
