Harpoon gun.
We used to boat around in the everglades and bayous with one of these.

You can even modify your ar to use as a harpoon gun

Then, you can pull those big fatties into the boat and harvest their meat and leather. The damn tourists like the skulls too.

Local Walmart may have sticks of gelignite and dynamite in isle 28. You won't need many. Just grab a six-pack for a weekend of fishing. Also get some water proof matches to be on the safe side. His leg is no good but I expect he can throw well.

Parents lived on the Mississippi bayou for years. Half my family lives just south of baton rouge. I have an uncle that literally makes his money catching gators.

I'm no expert, but I'd be surprised if anyone here has more time around gators than I do.

How's his strength? Tbh he needs range. A good rake to push with works to retreat.

I have seen on more than one occasion someone empty a clip of 9mm into a gator and not kill it. They got a small target to hit.

grandparents retired to sanibel island, florida.
they had a canal in their backyard that had gators, you'd see them sunning themselves on the bank on the opposite side of the canal (conversation land) or swimming back and forth.
grandfather was a huge fisherman and had this setup on the side of the house to clean fish. occasionally a gator or two would smell the fish and come up on the lawn a couple feet and sit there watching us. they were never more aggressive then that, so probably wouldn't sweat it with your dad.
though they did kill the neighbor's dog after he ran into the canal to take a swim.

You know, he could go traditional.
He sounds like a TK Baha character.
So, perhaps a shotty.

And a lawn chair.
