Wild Cards is a 30 year running anthology about an alien virus released on an alternate history of Earth and granting special abilities to those who come in contact with it. 90% of people die horrific deaths if the contract it, about 10% become Joker's (freaks of nature with transparent skin, extra arms, etc), and 1% become Aces with extraordinary abilities. Universal Cable Productions has purchased the rights.

I never really got into the wild cards books, can't remember why. I suppose they just weren't very good.

It's an anthology, there have been lots of writers including Martin. He edits the series. It's a little strange with the alternate history stuff, but it avoids the standard comic super hero tropes. It basically follows a "what if regular people suddenly had godlike powers?" Some heroes are complete assholes. There's one guy named the Turtle who is a telekinetic that flies himself around in armored car to protect his anonymity. Nobody knows that he's a fat, balding 40 year old who lives in a junkyard.

Never heard of this.

I read his 1980s book Fever Dream about a vampire and it was really good.

The stories are pretty hit or miss, but the "world" is pretty widespread so the show could follow the books or ignore them completely. It's told chronologically through decades of American history too, so there's the question of whether they stick to a single era or make it a period piece.

Another good example of one of the characters was Jack Braun, aka Golden Boy, who was a farm boy who fought in WW2 before being infected with the virus. He gains a golden bioshield that makes him impervious to harm, gives him super strength, and prevents him from aging. After the war, however, the fear of communism within the Ace community spreads and he rats on some friends and he becomes known as the Judas Ace. Since he doesn't age, he kind of disappears from the public eye but even 50 years later he's still shunned by people.
