Good times.
We went to Colorado and Wisconsin, but in the Plymouth Volare Station Wagon.
My dad had built a wooden roof top carrier for it with fake police lights painted on it. Red and green because he was Navy, lol.

No. We had a white one, and later a red model. Both with 318's and plastic woodgrain on the sides. Both got totaled in rear end collisions, one got hit so hard from behind the weight of my dad broke the seat so it was stuck in the reclining position. The axle shoved the driveshaft into the transmission. It's not what you think, he was running marathons at the time on the local race team and weighed maybe 140 pounds. The old guy that rear ended him claimed the massive damage was because the car was rusty, then died from internal injuries the next day. The Red one got hit a little lighter but still totaled He bought it back from insurance and sold it to someone for the engine. These cars probably saved my dad's life. His adventures with these taught me not to settle with insurance right away, he made money on both deals.

Nice. I learned on an old garden tractor and 1969 Volvo. Red Volare was around long enough for me to defile the backseat and put it in the ditch a few times.

That Volare is a classic road trip vehicle
I can see the faces pressed up against the windows.
Did you pull your arm to get semis to honk their horns?
Hell yeah you did.

They were actually clean cars. I remember him waxing the rockers to keep them pretty.

As expected, there was a pinhole in the trans dipstick tube. I enlarged it with my pick.

The new one fit in nicely but was a little shorter. It came with a shorter dipstick also, with the correct depth markings.

Played a fun game of where's the socket tightening down the tube mount. It fell off the 4' extension.

I was working at the red arrow from behind the transfer case because that was easier.

You can't get to it from underneath with the exhaust and front drive shaft installed, but you can start it from above if you're willing to climb over the engine and reach down the firewall.

Take a look at the previous pictures and try to find it please.

My god. I dropped a bolt a couple feet down and it took me a half hour to get it out. Wanted to junk the damn car.

It's a 9/16 stud-bolt for the dipstick tube/ bell housing, with a 1/2 inch nut that holds a ground strap and wire holding bracket. You can touch it blind from the other side of the transmission with the front drive shaft removed, or standing on your head over the engine. 4' was about right.

Hooked up the plow and ran around a little Friday, without 4 wheel drive...

I thought maybe I pinched a wire around the starter, but that wasn't the case.

The starter motor murder-suicided the front axle shift motor. This little guy moves a shift fork that connects the front drive axles to the drive shaft that goes back to the transfer case. In 2 wheel drive it saves wear and tear on those parts. Without it no 4 wheel drive.

It screws into the axle housing here.

Spoiler

Now it's happy again.
