Passengers on a Canadian charter flight danced, drank alcohol and vaped as they made their way from Montreal to Cancún, Mexico, the day before New Year***8217;s Eve. Video footage of the rave-like atmosphere made its way onto social media, and the images of maskless travelers partying in the air amid surging coronavirus cases sparked broad condemnation.

Now, those passengers have found themselves waylaid in Mexico, with several airlines unwilling to fly them back to Canada as the trip***8217;s organizer tries to negotiate their return.

Sunwing Airlines, which flew the group to Mexico, canceled the return flight, citing the group***8217;s disruptive behavior and refusal to accept the airline***8217;s stated terms and expectations for the flight back. Two other commercial airlines have refused to allow the group of more than two dozen passengers to board their planes.

***8220;All the flights have been [canceled],***8221; Rebecca St-Pierre, 19, told the Canadian Press. She said she won the trip on Instagram and expected a ***8220;relaxing week.***8221;

Instead, she is isolating in Tulum, a Mexican town south of Cancún, after testing positive for the coronavirus, she told the news agency. She estimated about 30 others from the Dec. 30 flight have also tested positive. Before the Jan. 5 return flight was canceled, St-Pierre told the wire service, some of the Canadian passengers put Vaseline up their noses, attempting to throw off the coronavirus tests.

At a Wednesday news conference, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the passengers***8217; behavior ***8220;irresponsible***8221; and a ***8220;slap in the face,***8221; especially as, he said, many Canadians have made sacrifices to limit the coronavirus***8217;s spread as cases surge.

Greg and Travis McMichael both received life sentences today in Ahmaud Arbery trial.

Last time either of them is ever going to wear a suit and tie. I wonder how the black population of whatever prison is going to welcome those 2 rednecks.

This should be entertaining. Armed robbery now a misdemeanor in Manhattan.

Manhattan DAs halt to prison sentences for many crimes was backed by Jerry Nadler, other prominent Democrats | Fox News

Quote:
Manhattan’s newly sworn-in district attorney reportedly told his staff he does not intend to prosecute several crimes, including resisting arrest. At the same time New York City’s newly sworn-in mayor is pledging to crack down on surging crime.

Alvin Bragg, a former federal prosecutor sworn in as Manhattan District Attorney on Jan. 1, sent guidance to his office calling for the "decriminalization/non prosecution" for crimes including marijuana possession, turnstile jumping, trespassing, resisting arrest, interfering with an arrest and prostitution.

Additionally, the guidance says the DA’s office will "not seek carceral sentence other than for homicide" or "class B violent felony in which a deadly weapon causes serious injury, domestic violence felonies" with some exceptions in "extraordinary circumstances."

The memo argues that "reserving incarceration for matters involving significant harm will make us safer."

Bragg’s office also says it will request a maximum of 20 years in prison for all crimes that don’t have a life-in-prison option and will never seek life without parole in any case regardless of how heinous.

The NBPP was founded in 1989 and is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The group is not affiliated with the original Black Panthers from the 1960s, and members of the original Panthers have accused the NBPP of the misappropriation of their name, both in public statements and in legal action.

Very true. It goes with extra freedom. Now, with lack of focus and diminishing attention to crime, lighter sentences, warped priorities - it is even riskier.

We will see how this all goes.

Of course, living in large or "important" cities is an increased risk too.

Son of Texas woman stabbed to death by man arrested 67 times and out on bail urges change: 'No accountability'
Rosalie Cook, a grandmother of six, had just purchased birthday cards when she was stabbed in a Walgreens parking lot

The son of a Houston grandmother who was fatally stabbed in 2020 by a suspect with an extensive criminal record and who was out on bond at the time is pressing to hold judges and the criminal justice system accountable for her death and that of others killed by criminal defendants released back onto the streets.

Rosalie Cook, 80, was walking to her car in a Walgreens parking lot just before 10 a.m. on May 16, 2020 after having purchased birthday cards when Randy Lewis pushed her to the ground and stabbed her to death. Lewis, 38, was shot and killed by police at the scene after having charged at an officer with a knife, police said.

Turkmenistan's leader wants 'Gates of Hell' fire put out
ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan ***8212; The president of Turkmenistan is calling for an end to one of the country's most notable but infernal sights ***8212; the blazing natural gas crater widely referred to as the "Gates of Hell."

The desert crater located about 260 kilometers (160 miles) north of the capital, Ashgabat, has burned for decades and is a popular sight for the small number of tourists who come to Turkmenistan, a country which is difficult to enter.

The Turkmen news site Turkmenportal said a 1971 gas-drilling collapse formed the crater, which is about 60 meters (190 feet) in diameter and 20 meters (70 feet) deep. To prevent the spread of gas, geologists set a fire, expecting the gas to burn off in a few weeks.

Stopping A Spill? There's Always The Nuclear Option

The spectacular if unwelcome fire that has burned ever since is so renowned that state TV showed President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov speeding around it in an off-road truck in 2019.

But Berdymukhamedov has ordered his government to look for ways to put the fire out because it is causing ecological damage and affecting the health of people living in the area, state newspaper Neitralny Turkmenistan reported Saturday.
