SL83's Extended and Ongoing Beer Thread

fuck history. taste, thickness, "mouthfeel" are what counts, and that's what separates porters from stouts (in my experience)

Sierra Nevada & Dogfish Head's

I have been enjoying Sam Adams winter lager the last couple weeks. Tried the great lakes seasonal xmas shit on draft last night and it was also pretty good.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about there OS. Guiness is actually really light on calories and alcohol level.

Agree on both points, that it's light on alcohol and calories - but it's quite heavy in sugars, which is why I can plow through 12 Miller Lites on any given day and just piss a lot, but I can't drink more than 4 Guinnesses without feeling like I just ate dinner.

not to mention the fact that a porter isn't a stout

A stout is a derivative of a porter. It's basically a strong porter. There is no real delineation. Dark porters, extra porters, or stout porters are all stouts - and they're also porters.

Any modern beer termed a porter is a stout by any other name.

I thought stouts were irish and porters were english (brit), but otherwise generally the same makeup.

sierra nevada wet hop is worth looking for. i'm not a fan of ipa's, but this was gpood shit

anyone who's a fan of IPA's needs to try three floyds alpha king. It's technically not an IPA, it's an American Pale Ale, but pretty much the same breed imo.

Not an IPA, but Robert the Bruce from three floyds is also yummy goodness.

I was in the store with a friend buying some Guinness when a random lady walked up and said "I OVERHEARD YOU NEED GUINNESS! IF YOU LIKE THAT STUFF THEN YOU WOULD LKE THE NUT BROWN ALE". I bought it right from her recommendation.

I'd be all like... "Bitch, I think I WILL try it... now quit your SCREAMIN!"

As far as Sam Adams beers go ...
Cream Stout, and only Cream Stout.

then again ... every time i stray away from Cream Stout, with Sam Adams brews, I am disappointed. So call me closed minded when it comes to Sam Adams.

here's some beers I picked up recently and some I'm aging.

hop devil: sixpack beer i'm drinking right now that's not bad.
thomas hardy: 2008 batch i'm aging, I'll drink it next year after the brewery shuts down.
dogfish head 120minute ipa: just picked up and will age at least 2 years
paradox islay: i love dark beers and scotch
Grand imperial porter: it was on sale and i wanted to compare this to gonzo imperial porter
trumpeter imperial stout: it's sooooo much better after 2 years.
Stone Imperial Russian Stout: one of my favorite beers, that is an 08, but I have at least one aging from 07 to 09.
Stone's bitter chocolate oatmeal stout: I wasn't very thrilled with a fresh bottle, that one's been aging for a year and I'll drink it after another (should cut down on the bitterness).
