Crossbow has a scope and you can leave it cocked. Aimed like a gun. Minuses is in CA you can only use it for rifle deer season. It's not considered archery. For pigs its not as big a deal since pigs are year round and there aren't many archery only spots. Though Lake Sonoma is one but they also accept crossbows.
The learning curve is pretty easy since you have a scope and it's pretty flat shooting. Loading it is more of a pain as is unloading it. Loading is done with a loading pulley and unloading is done by firing off the bolt with a decocking tip on it. Also crossbows are sorta heavy and front heavy. But as a plus you can load a xbow at the beginning of your hunt and insert a bolt right before your ready to shoot making you safe.
Compound bows are the way to go for what you appear to be doing, recurves and longbows are a huge learning curve even moreso then compounds. Compounds take practice to even draw them correctly, once you learn its really easy. Aiming bows is a lot of practice. you have a peep sight on your string and you've got pins on the front of the bow that you set to distances that you look at. Release the trigger and away goes the arrow hopefully to the right spot. Arrows miss a decent amount because 1. you twitched 2. you ****ed up your anchor point 3. you messed up the distance and picked the wrong pin 4. etc... But archery is a lot more challenging and can be a lot more satisfying since you have to work a lot harder with it. Also you should be willing to practice a lot more with a bow and be comfortable shooting in weird positions and from quick setups.
