Seconded. Definately colour.

Not enough contrast in b&w. Great texture. though.

Edit: More contrast and brightness in b&w and you get some goodness out of it. Am I right to assume that you just desaturated the original pic?

Color here for sure. also try upping the sharpness to bring out the texture. the B&W definitely needs more contrast. Also might be good to mess around with adding vignetting as the edges get a bit boring

and lastly if you can re-crop it, try giving it an extra 15% or so on the left, the edge of the curvy thing is just barely cut off and looks awkward. the circular hole is the focal point and should generally be placed using the "rule of thirds" -- at the intersection of lines of thirds like in the below photo from google:

WTF is this thread doing on page 9???

Here is an interesting story for high end gear snobs. It's a very old article but still valid nevertheless.

An award winning Magnum photographer Alex Majoli uses various Olympus point and shoot models like the C5050 (5 megapixel).

Check it out, awesome shots. I guess you could learn a lot about framing and composition from this guys work.

Rob Galbraith DPI: Alex Majoli points and shoots

I saw that article yesterday. I'm not surprised that a Magnum photographer can get great shots with point and shoots. After all these years his instincts for timing must be impeccable.

It's interesting what he says about blacks not rendering the way he wants on digital compared to film. And that's his only complaint of the files from a 5mp camera.

pattern is also a basic composition technique hes using a lot

I like to get pattern in my shots sometimes but i also like to break it up - like a broken egg in the egg shot. (on a rule of thirds, ho ho)

whatever makes a photo more interesting

I think I will leave work early and bust out some of the Fujichrome Velvia 100iso 120 film I bought the other day. It is nice and sunny out and I feel like making some 6x7 colour transparencies.

Didn't do eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. I picked up some Ilford Delta 3200iso instead and decided to save my Velvia for a camping trip next month.

EDIT: I did leave work early, though.

weak

I loved the one roll of medium format that I shot, but since I had to pay for developing and printing I sold the camera. It wasn't worth the expense for the crappy shots I take.

I develop my own b&w negatives and get the chemicals free at school. Transparencies, on the other had I can't do myself and have to pay $11 to process and mount them. But I found a really good lab that has good chemicals, competent staff and great hours. All that and $5 cheaper per roll then the last place I was using.
