However, you are completely wrong in saying that Japanese don't mix the wasabi into the soy sauce. A sushiya isn't the only place to eat sushi, and because of the cost most Japanese rarely go there. Instead, they go to kaiten-zushi restaurants (conveyor belt sushi) where wasabi is not put in the sushi because children and old people don't like it, or they eat it at home.
Having eaten at kaiten-zushi restaurants dozens of times with dozens of real Japanese people, I have never seen a Japanese person NOT mix the wasabi into the soy sauce. Is it the wrong way to eat it? Yes. But most Japanese people do it and that's how I learned, hence my mistake.
The same goes with sashimi. You should put the wasabi on the fish, not in the soy sauce. Ask the average Japanese person which is correct and you'd get a 50/50 split.

So basically you're calling 50% of all japanese people stupid.

No, just pointing out that sushi is such a small part of Japanese culture that 1) Nobody knows the "correct" way to eat it and 2) Nobody cares.
It's not like students take a class in school on sushi etiquette. Telling a Japanese person that they are eating their sushi wrong is like telling somebody they're eating their French fries wrong because they put the ketchup on the fries instead of dipping the fries into the ketchup.
The average Japanese person might eat sushi once every other month.***12288;They think it's amusing how obsessed Americans are with sushi. Look at the Japanese wikipedia page for sushiya: ??? - Wikipedia The only customer is a foreigner.
Sorry to tear down your fantasy world of a culture devoted to sushi with clearly defined sushi law. It's a casual food and can be eaten however you want to eat it.

I thought most people were already aware that sushi doesn't mean raw fish.

No. Prudes like Breyer are encouraged to think otherwise thanks to pseudointellectuals like Velocity...
It keeps them from getting bored I suppose.

"sushi" refers to nigiri sushi, the "oldest and most pure form of sushi" according to Alton Brown

This once again just goes to show, Americanized styles of food are better than their country of origin counter parts.
American pizza is better than Italian pizza.
American tacos are better than Mexican tacos.
American sushi is better than Jap sushi.
American Chinese food is way better than whatever the hell it is those people eat.

the only difference from california sushi is that they don't have the california rolls
the raw fish on top of rice that you get at any japanese food place is exactly the same.

all right except for pizza.
italian pizza is jesus christ amazing. american pizza has nothing on the kind of **** you buy by weight in pizzerias in rome, and that's comparitively "fast food" compared to sitting down at an actual pizzeria.
however real chinese food is disgusting. it's mostly tentacles mixed with raw eggs, and sometimes includes rice that tastes like it was boiled in garbage juice (it probably was)

REFERS, you moron. And then Alton goes on to describe the preservative qualities of foodstuffs set upon vinegarized rice.
You are dense because you stopped listening to what Mr. Brown said after you had heard all that you wanted to hear.

Sashimi literally means "pierced body", therefore in order to eat true sashimi, you need to stab yourself in the face and eat the **** inside your new hole.
