So the story goes
I was surfing on the outside 2 weeks ago on a sizable day.
Started paddling for a left (few feet overhead)
Looking to my right to see if someone else is
ah kinda see Manzano paddling but he's way deep
he always takes off deep but then only makes half of them
because it sections out in front of him...
Where I can catch this wave...
so committed i start to stand and lean forwar...
aww there's Manzano coming on toward the bottom
ok I can drop in behind him still on this wave
make it to the bottom, start to do my tur
doh inside some guy turned his board turtle
right where I have to do my bottom turn
I try to lighten up my feet but run over his board
and instant stop

He was bummed; I told him to be careful surfing on the inside on such a big day. I told him I could fix it... even though it was not my fault!
(let's get that straight)

Taped up to protect surrounding area and let me sand later.
Just about to cut off a broken area so I can fill it better.



materials!
epoxy resin (solerez quick hardens in the sun pronto)
Microballons - tiny glass spheres that lighten the first fill mix
some 6oz fiberglass pieces to lay near the top


Have to work in the dark bathroom or the resin will begin to set way too quick.
My place is just too damn sunny.

I have to work fast with this resin so gotta moveon


Alright this next part you have to imagine
so close your eyes and I'll explain
I mixed the resin and microballoons into almost a paste and started pouring/scraping/pushing that into the gash
(his board got stuck on my fin pretty deep)
added tiny pieces of fiberglass
(try that with sticky fingers; the trick is to have lots of paper towels and rubbing alcohol)
then pushed more goo in and smoothed it with fingers as best as possible

it's already setting up as I run the board out to the sun


Next day comes the sanding
Did I really fill it that much over the tape?
Sand it down to the top of the tape and then sand more to make a little bowl 2mm deep


Now you have to imagine again because I didn't get this cameraed.
I cut out a single piece of fiberglass almost the size of the area.
Put a little resin (no microballons to finish) laid in the glass piece
let it sit a 30 secs then filled area with resin...
then ran it to the sun


next day
more sanding more sanding more


until!


if I'd been really nice and good
I would have picked up some white pigment
but I think he should have this as a reminder
to stay outta my way!

I was catching this wave, it was mine and this maniac yells out "Get out of the way ya f'n noob". It was my wave so I continued on. Anyway this maniac then runs right over the top of me, ruins my board and punches me in the head as he goes over yelling "Get off my beach ya noob!".

Nice Sev, try some cellophane between your fingers and the goop next time. Makes for easier massaging and smoothing before it sets.

Also props on screwing with 'glass. I can't remember what I was doing with it, but I absolutely hated working with it. It was years ago and I was probably rebuilding rust damage. I actively avoided it after because it was such a pain, and not really the right product to repair metal anyway. Fiberglass does have it's place and they've made some nice advances in the last 20 years, UV activated must be nice. I may glass up a dash for the old Dodge once I replace the heater core and AC condenser.

Also good on ya for being a mentor. I'm assuming you explained how you were fixing the board, and how exactly he got in that situation in the first place. It's our duty to pass on experience so we all grow. You may have made a friend for life for very little (relative) expense.
