That's thanks to the massive area in the middle which are quite literally empty. Australia has a more urbanised population than the USA. Sydney and Melbourne together account for around half the population of the entire country.

Even within population centres, it's less. Both Sydney and Melbourne had been going weeks with no new cases. There was one outbreak (believed to be due to a flight crew) in Sydney which spiked things again for a while, but we're now back to five days without a single new case, let alone death.
I'm not denying we have some advantages in our situation, there certainly are.. But the difference is off the charts.

Melbourne and Sydney are about 1/3 not 1/2, and they both have very large metro areas. Fewer jets, fewer travelers. 8 million per year vs 1 million per day, and most of yours come from the covid hotbed of New Zealand. Somehow I doubt you were sticking covid patients into nursing homes, but I haven't checked. The differences in circumstances are off the charts as well. If Trump had been elected the Prime Quigley of Australia do you think your covid deaths would be off the charts?

Will the States listen to what the Fed says about distribution of vaccines? No.
Will the states bitch and moan if they want? Yes.
Is the president a doctor? No.

The President doesn't dictate what the states do, but you have to get that governors of states with big numbers of Trump supporters are going to lock themselves in with whatever he says. True to an extent of any President, but particularly so with the sort of populist cult following that Trump had. If he'd have said "hey folks, this is serious: wear masks, stay home, keep your distance if you can't, get tested," do you think that those states wouldn't have behaved differently?

What you missed is that half-educated rednecks are bigger asshats, so they hung on Trump's every word and acted like Covid was a myth, and something to push back against, like everything else they don't understand - minorities, gays, cars with no rust, people who don't own at least 15 guns and so on.
