The story of a Dragonborn Barbarian

Rakin looked out over over the bow of the ship, the sprawl of wooden buildings that made up the port of Zoa loomed ahead. It looked safe, impregnable with large wooden walls, a far cry from his home.

He had come from the dying Khy'dal Tribe, deep in the Khydoban Desert, they had little care for architecture, their homes where built for necessity, usually just large enough to cover them during day. At night, no one rested, especially the dead. Each night, grotesque monsters would arise from the desert itself, and seek to kill anything that moved. His people had to battle with these abominations, constantly. Their lives revolved around this battle, even the eldest never knew peace or safety. Each morning, slightly less of his people would come back. They where strong though, they had to be, they would not break, never, to the last they would fight. Fear and despair where not emotions they would ever obey or give in to. They represented the last of their ancient kind, and would not dishonor their legacy.

He was made of this mettle, one of the dying Khy'Dal Tribe, the humans on this ship where so soft, even their skin was soft. He could not imagine how the survived, how they lived, such weakness, supremely pathetic. Why he was chosen to initiate trade with such creatures was a mystery. But since he was young he would travel to Dynaj to fulfill this task.

Looking back he saw one of his employers, a pale softie, no name given, the man who had brought him to Zoa.

It started with a group of extremely well supplied men, looking to take an expedition deep into the Khydoban Desert. No one in Dynaj would go, or stomach the trip, their last resort was his people. The next time Rakin visited to trade, they approached him on the outskirts of the city. A large supply of arms, amazingly crafted, was given, with promises of more, in return, take them to an ancient ruin deep in the Khydoban Desert. He complied and after the trip, on returning to Dynaj, they offered him one final job, he just had to guard one of them on his trip to Zoa, in return even more crucial supplies for his tribe.

It was a tiring, unevenetful trip, the lack of battle or intense danger was completely foreign to Rakin, and nights where spent restlessly patrolling, watching the ocean for any signs of beasts arising to kill them all. The lack of alertness in the crew shocked him...

A jolt of action as the sailors prepared to dock changed his thoughts.

He was not sure what to make of the city before him, or what he would do while awaiting a return voyage back to Dynaj, he didn't really care though, these people did not intimidate in the least, it was the safest he had ever felt. The only discomfort would be having to wear a cloak everywhere, but that was so slight compared to raving grotesque undead monstrosities that he almost chuckled.

Doesn't he get first involved with a "rock in the crate" scam gang before going on to a good union job assembling wagons wheels for the King?

"A jolt of action as the sailors prepared to dock changed his thoughts."

This line gives me chills. Not good chills mind you, but chills nonetheless.

Snakin', Rakin, those tomb jewels I will be takin'

"A jolt of action as the sailors prepared to dock changed his thoughts."

Is that not the US Navy's new recruiting line?

***8220;Your partner has been kidnapped so they say?***8221; Arofo asked, and then shook his head. ***8220;And now you threaten the peace here? It is more likely she ran away with a merchant or a swordsman, having gotten tired of playing dragon.***8221;

Evot frowned back, then said, ***8220;Many know of what has happened. Your city is swollen now up with warriors from the north. If I raise my open blade here, they will raise theirs also. I will make this throat of yours very hot to get her back. How much chance do you think you have of holding onto it in a pitched battle, a battle against me?***8221;

Kiveda went to his sword while he still had room, and drew it out in a flashing line of silver. He had a polished style, and the blade favored fighting Hoin, being both heavy and wide. He struck up with a longer reach, going at Evot***8217;s feet and legs, trying to bully his way up on the landing one moment, and then testing Evot***8217;s footing by moving back the next. Evot let him come on, instead of accepting an uneven fight on the stairway. In four hard, snaking clashes of their swords, Kiveda was up to the last stair step.

Arofo struck out at him then, with a pair of nasty, quick strikes, and Evot dodged to the side, stumbled a bit on some rubble, and then grabbed out at the blackened rondel he had stuck into the post. Arofo went straight at him again, and when he tried to twist and get in at Evot with his sword, Evot used the rondel to catch the hanger***8217;s blade and pin it down against the wooden banister.

As Kiveda tried to dodge back and unpin his sword, Evot stabbed out with Hoin and poked its tip against the man***8217;s expensively decorated coat.

***8220;It appears I have been surpassed.***8221; Arofo stated, looking down at Hoin***8217;s point, and then he let go of his sword. Evot let the weapon fall free of them, and it slid away down the stair.

***8220;Tell me,***8221; Evot said, after a brief pause, ***8220;would there be a market for my partner below?***8221;

Arofo thought a moment, wondering at the question and then replied, ***8220;Surely, more than there is here or without. The empire rings us in on all sides, and as soon as you step off this mountain you are likely to be watched. The traffic of magical beasts is officially prohibited, and in secret, heavily controlled.***8221;

***8220;But slavery is not.***8221; Evot said. ***8220;There are a few things that can be done to restrict her magic, to subdue her. But I will wager her charm is not why this was done. If she could be put on a dragon***8217;s chain, would she then fit into your vault city below?***8221;

Arofo said slowly, ***8220;Possibly, and there is also more than a rumor that such oddities sometimes go out across the Sea of Teeth and do not return. It is even said that the nobles turn a blind eye to the practice.***8221;

***8220;So, you now confirm my suspicion.***8221; Evot said. He stabbed the rondel***8217;s pick head back into the railing and left it there, quivering, but did not yet lower Hoin's blade. ***8220;I must be permitted to go below, to Nekehn, to follow these men and win her back. I will take the yellow fringe of your lord, but you must promise to me that when I find the culprits, you will turn a blind eye.***8221;

Arofo barked out a laugh. ***8220;I cannot guarantee such a thing: I am but a captain. You will end up under the eye and thumb of any lord who is involved. But I can give you a ship berth if that is what you want, and support your passage below, for as long as it lasts.***8221;

***8220;Yes.***8221; Evot said. ***8220;And I will call off the north, and cease to destroy this city. But we will do this my way, Captain Kiveda.***8221; Evot turned Hoin away a little now and also shifted his feet upon the landing. He looked at Arofo again, his gray eyes now full of cunning. He leaned in toward him. ***8220;This is what we will do.***8221;
