The Barrier Reef has COVID

Quote:
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ***8212; Australia's Great Barrier Reef is spawning in an explosion of color as the World Heritage-listed natural wonder recovers from life-threatening coral bleaching episodes.

Scientists on Tuesday night recorded the corals fertilizing billions of offspring by casting sperm and eggs into the Pacific Ocean off the Queensland state coastal city of Cairns.

The spawning event lasts for two or three days.

The network of 2,500 reefs covering 348,000 square kilometers (134,000 square miles) suffered significantly from coral bleaching caused by unusually warm ocean temperatures in 2016, 2017 and last year. The bleaching damaged two-thirds of the coral.
Great Barrier Reef Bleaching 'Has Been Devastating' ***8212; But Don't Give Up Hope, Specialist Says

Gareth Phillips, a marine scientist with Reef Teach, a tourism and educational business, is studying the spawning as part of a project to monitor the reef's health.

"It is gratifying to see the reef give birth," Phillips said in a statement on Wednesday. "It's a strong demonstration that its ecological functions are intact and working after being in a recovery phase for more than 18 months."

"The reef has gone through its own troubles like we all have, but it can still respond ***8212; and that gives us hope. I think we must all focus on the victories as we emerge from the pandemic," Phillips added.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark ***8212; Hours after being tapped as Sweden's first female prime minister, Magdalena Andersson resigned Wednesday after suffering a budget defeat in parliament and her coalition partner the Greens left the two-party minority government.

The government's own budget proposal was rejected in favor of one presented by the opposition that includes the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats. Sweden's third-largest party is rooted in a neo-Nazi movement. The vote was 154-143 in favor of the opposition's budget proposal.

Andersson, leader of the Social Democratic party, decided it was best to step down from the post more than seven hours after she made history by becoming the first woman to lead the country.

"For me, it is about respect, but I also do not want to lead a government where there may be grounds to question its legitimacy," Andersson told a news conference.

'Afghan Girl' From National Geographic Evacuated to Italy at Age 49

Quote:
The "Afghan Girl" with piercing green eyes who gained worldwide recognition after appearing on the cover of a 1985 National Geographic has fled her home country and arrived in Rome.

The Italian government said in a statement on Thursday that the move was "part of the wider evacuation programme in place for Afghan citizens" since the Taliban gained control of Afghanistan. CNN reported that she has been granted refugee status by Italy's Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

The girl, Sharbat Gula, now 49, was photographed in a Pakistani refugee camp during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in 1984.

At the time, Gula was roughly 12 years old, and sitting in a tent being used as a classroom. After her picture was taken, she grew up, left the refugee camp in the early 1990s, started a family, and remained largely anonymous until the American photographer who took her photo, Steve McCurry, tracked her down again in 2002.

McCurry told NPR then that Gula had led a "relatively peaceful" and "traditional Pashtun" life.

But then, in 2016, Gula was deported from Pakistan to Afghanistan after she was accused of buying a fake Pakistani ID card. At the time, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani welcomed her back to the country and promised to house her in a furnished apartment.

"I've said repeatedly, and I like to repeat it again, that our country is incomplete until we absorb all of our refugees," Ghani said at the time, the Guardian reported.

Five years later, it was Ghani himself who fled Afghanistan, as the Taliban took control of the country in August.

McCurry told NPR the photo of Gula is one that people tend to come back to "over and over again."

"I think part of the chord that it struck in people all over the world is this combination of a young girl who's very pretty, yet there seems to be something troubling about her," he said. "There's a dignity, there's a fortitude, there's a lot of different levels."

Didn't the left declare that tear gas was chemical warfare during the "protests"?
If so, isn't this a chemical attack during a crime?

Thieves rushed into a Southern California Nordstrom store the night before Thanksgiving and ran off with pricey goods in the latest of a string of organized retail thefts. Five people, one wearing an orange wig, entered the open store shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Westfield Topanga Mall in the Canoga Park area of Los Angeles, took seven or eight expensive purses and fled in a grey Ford Mustang, police said.

A security guard was sprayed with Bear Spray by the thieves and was treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital, police said.

The Los Angeles Police Department recently started a special task force made up of veteran robbery homicide detectives due to an increase in brazen thefts in recent days, CBS Los Angeles reports. The police said they had extra patrols at the mall but the suspects chose a time where there were no cops around.

I thought that Afghan girl had gotten hell ugly and wrinkled when I saw something on her years ago, looks like she must have had some work done since then, maybe she has had a chemical peel, possibly a welcome gift from the Taliban ...

Sandra Bullock has received critical acclaim ***8212; including an Oscar and a Golden Globe ***8212; for her performances in dramas like The Blind Side and Gravity. But after completing her latest film, The Unforgivable, she decided once and for all that her heart belongs to comedy.

"I'm never doing a drama again," Bullock told Q's Tom Power in an interview. "I just want to do my comedy. I'm going back to comedy. And I'm going to fight for it and I'm going to enjoy it."
