Bay mussels in Washington's Puget Sound have tested positive for trace amounts of oxycodone, providing more evidence that the opioid prescription medication is truly ubiquitous.
Researchers at the Puget Sound Institute who analyzed the mussels said the discovery of pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs in harbors in the Seattle and Bremerton areas is not uncommon ***8212; but the organization noted this is the first time that opioids have been found in local shellfish.
Environment
"We found antibiotics, we found antidepressants, chemotherapy drugs, heart medications and also oxycodone," biologist Jennifer Lanksbury, who led the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife study, told K5 News.
Scientists determined that the slew of medications are passed into the Puget Sound through discharge from wastewater treatment plants.
The analysis is part of the state's biennial Puget Sound Mussel Monitoring Program, in which uncontaminated mussels are transplanted into various locations to study pollution levels.
The reason mussels are the preferred test subject to track toxins in marine life is because they are filter feeders, eating microscopic plants and animals that they strain out of seawater. In the process, "they pick up all sorts of contaminants, so at any given time their body tissues record data about water quality over the previous two to four months," the institute explains.
The Institute reported that the amount of oxycodone found in the tainted mussels was thousands of times lower than a therapeutic dose for humans. And the highly addictive drug was only ingested by mussels in three of 18 test sites, described as highly urbanized and not near any commercial shellfish beds.
Andy James, who assisted with the study, said it's unlikely mussels can metabolize the drugs, but researchers are concerned about the potential for the impact of the drug on fish, which are know to respond to opioids. Lab studies have shown that given the choice, zebrafish willingly dose themselves with opioids. The fear is that salmon and other fish may have similar responses.
In addition to oxycodone, scientists found high levels of the chemotherapy drug Melphalan ***8212; a potential carcinogen ***8212; in the mussels. The drug was found at "levels where we might want to look at biological impacts," according to James.

PORTLAND, OR (KATU/CNN) - Violent clashes broke out in Portland, OR, Sunday between opposing protesters.
Right-wing group Patriot Prayer held a "Freedom March" at Terry Schrunk Plaza.
Members of a local branch of anti-fascist group Antifa held a counter-rally in the same area.
There was also an anti-police brutality demonstration nearby.
Portland police said none of the groups applied for permits to march on the streets. They were told to move to the sidewalk to avoid arrest.
Police also said on Twitter Sunday that they observed "multiple fights" and confiscated several

Anyway - never one to like seeing someone getting outnumbered and wailed on - I walk up and say "It's too nice a day to be beating the **** out of people". They all look at me. The asshat on the ground looks up with blood coming out of his mouth. Looks me straight in the eye and spits out "**** you".
So - I look at the other dudes and say "Yeah - maybe he does need his ass beat." I turn around while they start laughing and kicking him again.

And then the whole street clapped

Road rage attack leaves couple brutally beaten, police say
Quote:
An Oregon man broke a woman***8217;s arm, beat her and then attacked her fiancée in a bitter road rage attack Friday night, police said.
Jay Allen Barbeau, 49, of Redmond, was arrested on three counts of assault and single counts of criminal mischief and reckless driving, according to The Oregonian. He is being held in Deschutes County Jail.
Megan Stackhouse and Lucina Mann were both injured in the attack at a traffic circle in Bend, The Oregonian reported. The couple had just left a carnival when they were trying to merge into heavy traffic and pulled in front of a truck.
The truck, which Barbeau was allegedly driving, tailed the women for blocks, Stackhouse told the newspaper. She said she pulled over on a road to let the man pass, but instead he got out of his car and attacked them.
Barbeau shattered the couple's rear window with his fist and then reached into the car, grabbed Stackhouse***8217;s arm through the open driver***8217;s side window and bent it until it snapped, she said.
***8220;It was a compound fracture,***8221; Stackhouse told The Oregonian.
Mann then tried to run around to stop the attack when Barbeau threw her down head first onto the concrete, knocking her unconscious, according to the newspaper. Stackhouse said she recalled a female passenger who was with Barbeau urge him to flee the scene.
Officers arrived on the scene before Barbeau could flee.

Man killed by police was US Navy vet trying to break up fight, reports say | Fox News
Quote:
A man fatally shot outside a sports bar by Portland State University campus police Friday night was a U.S. Navy veteran and father of three who was trying to break up a fight, reports said.
Jason E. Washington, 45, a U.S. Postal Service worker from Portland, Ore., was a licensed gun owner with a concealed carry permit, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported.
But Washington's gun dropped when he intervened in a fight that began inside the bar moved outside, witnesses told OPB.
NEW: Man killed by armed PSU officers had valid concealed carry permit at the time of his death. Two of his colleagues and at least one witness say Jason Washington, 45, was black.
The fight reportedly began over a racial slur.
Cellphone footage shows a gun slipping away from Washington in the middle of the scuffle. Officers can be heard shouting, ***8220;Drop the gun!***8221; several times, before firing their weapons.
Witness accounts differed on how the scene unfolded.
Keyaira Smith, who filmed the encounter, told OPB that Washington was "trying to be a good Samaritan."
***8220;The gun slipped out of the holster when he had fallen, and I think he may have tried to retrieve it,***8221; Smith said, adding that the officers began firing as soon as they saw the weapon.

- Keyaira Smith, witness
***8220;There was absolutely no hesitation at all,***8221; she said.
But Donald Dietz, 25, an employee at the sports bar, claimed that the officers warned Washington first.
***8220;They warned him multiple times not to reach for it, but he did,***8221; Dietz said. ***8220;People think they were overzealous, but they had to do it.***8221;
The two responding campus police officers were identified as Shawn McKenzie and James Dewey. Both men became sworn officers in 2016, two years after Portland State University began allowing campus police to carry firearms.
The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, the Oregonian reported. Portland State University released a statement saying it would not be releasing further information for the time being.
Multiple agencies are investigating the fatal shooting.
