there was a TED talk recently where a guy showed off some new asphalt tech that actually repaired itself when it was heated. he broke it in half on stage then microwaved it and it was fixed.

in terms of sustainable roads, that is much more likely than gorilla glass highways

The Federal Highway Administration also tasked us to add a component to address the problem of stormwater. We have created a section in our Cable Corridors for storing, treating, and moving stormwater.
Our glass surface has been tested for traction, load testing, and impact resistance testing in civil engineering laboratories around the country, and exceeded all requirements.
We are about to wrap up our Phase II contract (to build a prototype parking lot) and now need to raise funding for production.

The Idaho couple who created an innovative road surface made of solar panels is back with a prototype, and they***8217;re looking to Indiegogo for additional funding.

Scott and Julie Brusaw want to replace traditional asphalt and concrete with impact-resistant solar panels that do double duty as a road surface and an energy source. When the solar roadway concept debuted in 2010, it caught the interest of futurists and government officials. Now the Brusaws have a working prototype covering a 12- by 36-foot parking lot outside the couple***8217;s electronics lab in Idaho.

The new panels look quite different from the prototype we saw almost four years ago. The latest design is hexagonal, which allows for better coverage on curves and hills. They***8217;re also heated for easier snow and ice removal, and include LEDs that can display road markings or even messages.

According to the Brusaws, the new glass-covered panels have been tested for traction and impact resistance, and can sustain a 250,000-pound load. They***8217;ve even got a video of a tractor driving over the parking lot prototype. This is also the first time the panels have been subjected to real-world road conditions, and the parking lot includes a dedicated channel for drainage and utilities.

Up until this point, the project has been financed through a $50,000 private grant and two phases of funding from the Federal Highway Administration. Now, the Brusaws have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $1 million for commercialization of their prototypes.

It***8217;s an interesting concept. Individually, small solar parking lots and crosswalks can power signs and street lamps. Deployed across a whole town, a network of solar roads could act as a decentralized electric grid, sending power to homes and businesses.

There***8217;s no word yet on how much the prototype installation cost***8212;those numbers are being worked up and should be ready in July***8212;but the Brusaws say a commercialized solar roadway will provide enough power to pay for itself over its lifespan.

Glass highways are the future. This is what our prehistory ancestors built their cities of.

Combination of strength and toughness superior to any other known material

New glass stronger and tougher than steel -- ScienceDaily

Problem is it has to be made in a zero G vacuum

[backstory: NASA has known for decades that glass is better and stronger but forces private industry to find out on its own]

None of these are needed, just the proper advances in materials research.

The colonies on the moon had glass foundations and domes. However, in almost every part of the structure below the domes, different kinds of glass were used.

The glass used in the domes was/is (in whichever domes are still there) able to heal itself of punctures. The glass beneath the domes may not have been the same. Some of it was designed with different default levels of opaqueness. I say default because, electrical signals put through the glass would change the colour of the glass.

However wonderful this material sounds, the civilizations on Mars and the Moon did not use glass to construct ships, they used gold, steel, aluminum and titanium.

So while we know this is the ideal material to use,

Earth:
it was never used on earth. There were no domed cities, or glass highways here.

The first reason is, there is no written/oral record of such nor has anything been found. The soviets found an asphalt highway 250 km long off the coast of Florida, where Atlantis sunk. Along with other stuff including a monorail system.

The second reason is probably the extreme difficulty in producing that glass in the pressurized environment in which we live. Achieving anything close to vacuum on earth is extremely expensive and even then only for the smallest of spaces.

Mars:
Glass highways existed/exist on Mars.



The photos of this highway actually show a vehicle stuck in it.

How did Martians (it was a mixed race) pull this off?

This highway would have a late construction date on it just like most of the artifacts we have seen. Mars died as a planet long before its inhabitants and its atmosphere turned to vacuum long before its civilization died.

Their civilization, faced with impending doom, built pressurized domed cities to live in. The one we know most about is Gale crater, which is where NASA has been exploring for the last 30 years. This was the site of the last vestige of above ground Martian civilization.

To me it looks like the bubble burst, maybe an earthquake brought it up out of the ground. In any case I think very little of what we see makes sense because of the upheaval it all went through during 'the fall' of Genesis.

For example the martian city of Cydonia is completely destroyed. It was destroyed and then all their machinery and constructs were eroded over an extremely long period. There are pictures of collapsed Martian apartment blocks.

NASA is also pretty frustrated even though Curiosity has 19 cameras and a spectrometer they have started 3d printing stuff they see to help figure out what it was.

and you're breaking down on I-95 with an axle that damages about 25% of the mile of panel you're on, now they have to close down one of I-95's lanes to clear up the glass shards and another day on top of the one you broke down on to now pop out that panel, reconnect the wiring, and put in a new panel...

that old panel sure did pay for itself

better yet in a few years of scratched up panels producing **** amounts of power, damaged panels, etc... it'll be the same old **** different story of having road crews show up and slap a patch of asphalt on a pot hole...oh wait theres ton's of potholes that take months to get fixed with even a simple patch job.
