144mhz and Freesync monitors

So my current monitor (24" Samsung) has started blinking black alot the past few weeks. After 5 years, i think its on its way out. Since I have an radeon 480, and I am looking into the new Freesync and 144mhz monitors. I see a few review sights that show the typical players doing well (ViewSonic, BenQ) but I also see well reviewed vendors I have never heard of (AOC, Nixeus).

Whats tw experience with 144mz/Freesync? Anything as a new buyer I would need to be aware of? My readon 480 can obviously do displayport, which is how freesync is transmitted (not hdmi).

Edit: I see myself playing games in 1080p (24"). Maybe I will go up to 27", but I can't tell the difference in watching movies in 1080p vs 4K at anything below 65".

i went 27", 1080p, and 144hz for the sole purpose of not wanting to update the 1060 gpu very often. I should be fine playing most games at over 144fps with this gpu.

the sync monitors add another $150 to the deal and from what i've read are only worth it if your GPU isn't hitting your monitors maximum refresh rate.

as for 1080p vs 4K ... depends mostly on the source in my thus far limited experience. i have a few 4K > 1080p rips that look stellar. the netflix 4K nature docs though look even better.
 
but there arent any 144mhz 4k freesync monitors on the market, at least none in my $200-$300 price range. For 4K, all i see is 60mhz. I game on this a lot more than watching 4K stuff.

What monitor do you have? I'm looking at the ViewSonic XG2701 ($323 amazon)
 
i was talking two different things.

i went 27" 1080p non sync on the monitor - Benq 2720z. i love it, half of tw talked shit, but it was a huge boost in visual quality and performance over my older 27".

if you go for a larger resolution for gaming then you have to increase the GPU power or pay more for the monitor and use g/free/sync. it just isn't worth it IMO.

the 4k stuff i was talking more home theater. i tried some rocket league on my new TV but the old GPU in my htpc was getting maybe 15 FPS running at 4K. it looked glorious but it was a slide show.
 
Why would you buy a non-sync? Granted, you have an nvidia, and gsync adds a $100-$150 premium. For amd, freesync is well called that because its free. The monitor I listed can do sync 48-144mhz, so as long as you are getting at least 48fps in a game, the sync mode will be activated. Its not for getting the max of 144mhz, thats for non-variable displays. The whole point of sync technology is that you can get the smoothness and no tearing and not have to hit 144fps or whatever the max monitor refresh rate.
 
because IMO the 'sync' monitors only have value if you aren't hitting the max refresh rate of 144hz. since my resolution is capped at 1080, and my gpu can easily handle over 144fps @1080 ... whats the point of gsync?

i saved on the monitor and saved on the gpu.
 
I thought screen tearing is the result of the monitor refresh rate not 'in sync' with the gfx card frame rate?

So in your situation, if must lock your FPS at 144, then theoretically you should be getting 144 fps without tearing?
 
That's assuming your FPS never drops (and it will occasionally dip, no avoiding it). So you'll still get some tearing, just not nearly as much. :weird:
 
i have a great system (i7 6700K, radeon 480, 16gb ram) but i highly doubt i will get >144fps in every game i play. Esp in the next 5 years
 
i see.

well I hear 144hz is bomb, so i'd probably get that with freesync if it doesnt destroy your wallet
 
AMD freesync is a free upgrade, it doesnt increase the price of the monitor

Nvidia gsycn costs $150+ more.

Blinking black might be the good ole memory clock profile switching issue that was never fixed. p55 chipset by any chance? Happens with both nVidia and AMD GPUs.

the board is basically brand new, the chipset is an intel G170
