'Piracy' student loses US extradition battle over copyright infringement
TVShack's Richard O'Dwyer faces 10 years in jail for operating website US authorities say hosts links to copyrighted material.
A judge ruled on Friday that a 23-year-old student can be extradited to the United States for running a website posting links to pirated TV shows and films, despite significant doubts over whether such sites break any UK laws.
...
Richard O'Dwyer, a computing student at Sheffield Hallam University, faces a potential 10-year term in a US jail despite never having been to America or using web servers based in the country. When still a teenager O'Dwyer set up a website, TVShack, which posted links to pirated material. It did not directly host any files, which meant, according to the student's lawyers, that it acted as little more than a Google-type search engine and did not breach copyright.
...
Opponents of the current arrangements, including many MPs, say the fact US prosecutors do not need to present prima facie evidence to gain extradition makes it too easy for British nationals to be sent over, where they often spend long periods in jail before trial.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has faced criticism for perceived overreach in targeting websites, like TVShack, with no direct US link.
In July the agency's assistant deputy director told the Guardian that ICE would now actively pursue websites similar to TVShack even if their only connection to the US was a website address ending in .com or .net.
Such suffixes are routed through Verisign, an internet infrastructure company based in Virginia, which the agency believes is sufficient to seek a US prosecution.

And everyone's worried about SOPA and PIPA...
The government already exercises that power - they just want to codify and streamline it.

You are correct, this battle was lost when copyright infringement became a crime, which was only recently.
It's not society's responsibility to make sure people don't share music and movies, we are already past ****ed up.

They go after web sites which are sitting duck targets. End users don't have to worry too much right now. That's why the torrent sites are hosted in foreign countries after Oink was shut down and came back as Waffles.

Imagine how helpless the dude feels. Getting extradited and facing 10 years in prison while he probably doesn't feel like he has done anything wrong. I mean at least i don't think he has done anything wrong. From what i understood he only shared links?
Do a google search for .mp3 files and see how many links of copyrighted material you will find. After that do a google search for how much google makes money.
Than again, Google can afford a long and lengthy litigation that could possibly even become a landmark case and there is a (small?) possibility that the case might turn out in Google's favour and thus become a precedent which actually allows sharing links.
But a university student from the UK? Free game. Easy money. "Lets make an example."

Pretty sure the reason Canada didn't participate in the Iraq War was because the United Nations didn't sanction it.
Do you consider Canada to be wholly subservient to the UN?
