Not just no, but **** NO.

The minimum wage exists to protect employees from abusive wage practices. It does not exist to ensure a "living wage" (or whatever the buzzword is now) for unskilled and transitional labor. Go **** yourself.

there is no need for a federal minimum wage. states can handle that on their own. furthermore, there is no need for any minimum wage all. Stop allowing illegal immigrants in and limit the goddamn H1-B visas and wages will rise. Supply and demand is the most basic economic theory and it applies to labor just like everything else.

No, I do not think LaQuisha flipping burgers at Wendy's deserves to make $15 an hour.

"living wage" isn't a new buzzword. Its actually how minimum wage was described by president roosevelt when pushing the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 that put minimum wage into place

A living wage isn't possible with globalization. The bigger businesses are just going to ship jobs off overseas, automate them, or fire their current staff and replace them with **** wage H1Bs. The small business people are going to drown if they aren't allowed to file for a waiver.

well yeah
i mean if you have one kid and both parents are working to make ends meet thats pretty reasonable

but if they have 4 or 5 they're just ****ing dumb. like i just cant fathom the way they rationalize it in their head that this is a good idea.

at the end of the day though, im tired of ppl pointing fingers at the govt or at some other flaw in society when the real problem is themselves. someone needs to tell them they are stupid and bad ****ing parents for putting themselves in ****ty situations

Because they are spending $300 on new shoes and don't spend their money responsibly. Being poor in America is hilarious when you compare it to being poor in other places. I mean we're giving internet away like it's required for survival.

Yeah, I don't know why anyone on TW should care one way or another. Are you getting all worked up because you think "the poors" are going to take your money? Or has corporate America really brainwashed you so much that you actually think they'd all really pack up and leave the country (a country that works more hours than the majority of other countries)?

ABC News - Americans: Overworked, Overstressed

CNNMoney - Turns out Americans work really hard...but some want to work harder

Quote:
Traditionally there was a link between how much goods and services workers produced and how much they were compensated.

Essentially the more businesses were able to sell, the more they paid their workers. From the end of World War II to the early 1970s, growth in one measure nearly mirrored the growth in the other.

But since the early 1970s, the two measures have split severely. Productivity has continued to grow, but wages of most workers have stagnated when controlled for inflation.

Analysis done by the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal Washington think tank, shows productivity growing 240% between 1948 and 2013, while wages of non-supervisory workers grew only 108% during the same period. There has been little gain in real wages of those workers since 1978.
