Without a steady coolant supply, a hot reactor core will continuously boil off the water surrounding it until the fuel is no longer immersed. If fuel rods remain uncovered, they may begin to melt, and hot, radioactive fuel can pool at the bottom of the vessel containing the reactor. In a worst-case meltdown scenario the puddle of hot fuel could melt through the steel containment vessel and through subsequent barriers meant to contain the nuclear material, exposing massive quantities of radioactivity to the outside world.

1st operation

Japan Self-Defense Forces dropped 4 huge buckets of seawater from helicopters in this morning. Lead plates were installed at the bottom of the helicopters to shield radiation and crew members wore radiation protection suits.

* 2nd operation

The National Police Agency tried to pour water from the ground with pumper truck in the evening. However, they were not able to come close because of high radiation and water did not reach the pool.

* 3rd operation

Japan Self-Defense Forces poured 30 tons of water from the ground with 5 special pumper trucks from 19:45 to 20:09. Because these trucks are special, they were able to do this operation

Oh those silly Chinese buying salt.

We had reports earlier that people were panic-buying salt in China to protect themselves from radiation emanating from Japan, even though the country is not affected. One Chinese woman told the BBC: "My family called from my hometown and said they'd looked for salt like crazy and couldn't get any. I was so surprised. I said: 'But isn't there loads of salt around?' and they said, 'No, because of the explosion in Japan'. I saw we had no salt, so I ran down to the supermarket, and people had already snatched it all up, there was none there either."
