I realize its procedure to shut down the reactors, but their primary back up was inoperative. No power, no cooling, disaster. A nuclear power station melting down because of a lack of power is ironic.

Iodine only protects against radiated iodine 131 particles which only remain dangerous for 8-30 days. It's the radioactive cesnium particles that stick around for thousands of years.

"Though radioactive iodine has a short half-life of about 8 days and decays naturally within a matter of weeks, there is a short-term risk to human health if radioactive iodine in food is absorbed into the human body," the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement.
