HEY!

ReCurve 03-11-2011 10:24

They just said 88,000 missing and feared dead.

The Loma Prieta quake was 15 seconds long, and that seemed a long time, this was supposed to be almost 5 minutes. I can't even imagine.

Flyersfan 03-11-2011 10:37

Uhhhhh 8.9

If a sizable tsunami is possible on the west coast, this is the ****ing thing that could do it.

I would evacuate if I lived on the beach right now

cancer 03-11-2011 10:44

wow
this is terrible news :(

samUwell 03-11-2011 10:45

so, it was supposed to hit Crescent City, Humbolt State 10 minutes ago and so far, nothing. should be hitting the golden gate bridge in 15 minutes.

if it does, the damage will be minimal due to it being low tides.

**** all happened in Hawaii so i really don't see how the west coast would be in trouble outside of some high waves.

SonGohan 03-11-2011 10:54

What did the photographer say, when about to photograph a group of tourists?

.
"WAVE!"

Oh, Google, you have such witty results when searching for Tsunami jokes.

Been watching for a while, and the 88k number hasn't been mentioned again. Hopefully somebody misread something

SonGohan 03-11-2011 10:56

Japan is a very highly condensed area. It could happen.

ChewSpitt 03-11-2011 10:56

they mentioned 88k missing on NPR during my ride to work today

Rockstar Psy 03-11-2011 10:56

I'm pretty sure a nuclear power plant in japan would be built to withstand a strong earthquake.

Edit: Withstand as in not release any radioactive material.

At least 137 people were killed, 539 were injured and 351 were missing after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan on Friday, according to the Kyodo News Agency, citing police. Additionally, between 200 and 300 bodies have been found in the coastal city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture following the subsequent tsunami that struck that area. The death toll is likely to rise as there are few casualty counts yet from the worst-hit areas.

I could believe it. The overall damage from quakes is inversely proportional to the level of development. That's why you can have 200K+ dead from a 7.0 in Haiti but the Japanese shrug off an 8.9.

A country that has robot hookers is also going to have building codes.
