evacuating to 30km away now

edit: 20 yes

JoMo 03-12-2011 05:13

Evac zone expanded to 20 km.

1009: "This is starting to look a lot like Chernobyl" Walt Patterson, an associate fellow with Chatham House, has told the BBC after seeing pictures of the explosion at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant. "The nuclear agency says that they have detected caesium and iodine outside the unit, which certainly indicates fuel melting at the very least," he says. "Once you have melting fuel coming into contact with water, that would almost certainly be the cause of the explosion."

CogitoČ 03-12-2011 05:13

Wow, this is insane. Watching this disaster unfold over the last 24 hours has been very unsettling to say the least.

Dresden 03-12-2011 05:14

Wow, the water may never recede in some areas. Is the plant still flooded?

Horrified by what the final death toll will be :( News says 1000 now but it's got to be at least 250k - 1 mill.

JoMo 03-12-2011 05:19

1016: The BBC's environment correspondent Roger Harrabin says he understands the blast at the nuclear plant may have been caused by a hydrogen explosion - also one of the possibilities laid out by Walt Patterson of Chatham House. "If nuclear fuel rods overheat and then come into contact with water, this produces a large amount of highly-flammable hydrogen gas which can then ignite," our correspondent says.

Certainly hope this is true. The nature of the blast looked like a lot of rapidly expanding air, as though some tanks exploded, or gas pressure surpassed the threshold for its containment. I really don't know what a truly disastrous meltdown would look like.

I think everyone wants to hear what is going on at Fukushima right now, but the questions are coming faster than can be answered by authorities, who are probably scrambling right now with their very lives on the line.

CogitoČ 03-12-2011 05:46

Quote:

Communications director at the World Nuclear Association, Ian Hore-Lacy, says he believes the blast at the power plant was due to hydrogen igniting, and that it may not necessarily have caused radiation leakage, and adds that if the hydrogen has ignited, then it is gone, and doesn't pose any further threat.

Been hearing about hydrogen exploding. Whatever it was, it exploded very rapidly.

Yankee 03-12-2011 05:49

yeah, I'm used to seeing really slowly moving explosions...

Japan's coast has moved 8 feet and the Earth's axis has shifted by 4 inches according to CNN

ReCurve 03-12-2011 07:47

Is it because of the earthquake, or are surgical masks really that common in Japan?

ReCurve 03-12-2011 08:09

1305: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Japanese authorities are making preparations to distribute iodine to residents in the area of both the Fukushima nuclear plants. The IAEA has reiterated its offer of technical assistance to Japan, should the government request this.

The Japanese people are well prepared for nuclear meltdowns.

Yankee 03-12-2011 10:08

well, if anyone knows how to recover from a nuclear explosion, it would be the Nipponese.

Trickster 03-12-2011 10:11

All the feeds I have are not talking about it.
I only know because my coworker called to tell me. But I can***8217;t find any information about it.
