Crimea had importance due to their black Sea naval base and transcaucasian pipelines which took it through Crimean centered exclusive economic zone and Russia not wanting Europe to have a chance to get away from their pipelines. As always follow the oil. There's also the whole deal that they are our allies. Whether they should be or not is another deal. I'm a bleeding heart who feel france/UK ****ed poland/czechoslovakia in ww2 and an independent Ukraine is key for an independent poland. Poland also loves us and there are better deals with those who care for us. |

Short answer: if you have the power to enfranchise yourself a nation, then do it or don't. Your nation must enforce it's borders militarily and diplomatically. Russia did a great job splitting Ukrainians against an eu-aligned government and has lost a part of their country, maybe more we will see how the donetsk basin plays out. We were too weak to step in on Crimea as was most egregiously their own military. All Crimea is useful now as a bartering chip diplomaticly |
Ukrainians aren't even a specific people, they're Russians. The Ukrainian nationalist movement was basically created by Poland after the Poles lost their foothold in that region. Ukrainians speak "Ukrainian" which isn't a separate language, but a local dialect.

I mean that's most Slavic countries isn't it?

Crimea was never going to be a bargaining chip.
The US withdrew from a 30+ year anti ballistic missile treaty with the Russians and now they have missile installations in Romania, bordering the Black Sea. The thought that Putin would simply shrug off Crimea as a loss is laughable. It's not about oil or politics or any of that bull****. |
Syria fell, the people cried for help, the UN ignored it, capitalism won over life and freedom, the world commit another global atrocity for pride and money, genocide and hate continues and everyone feels justified because they took some LSD smoked some reefer and listened to the Beatles a couple times.

Obama told Putin to stop hacking and he did. LOL Right......
As far as what's going to be done. " Stuff will be done but not necessarily announced, but they'll know" |
stop all that whacky hacky stuff
|
okie doke

Obama said no Russian tampering with the voting process, blames the media for writing stories about the Wikileaks, didn't do anything about it sooner because the Administration wanted to appear 'neutral' in the election..... Obama won't declassify any evidence that shows the Russian hacking because it would disclose sources and intelligence methods....

The missile shield is the big thing. There's a reason Russia is upgrading their nuclear arsenal and refuses to decrease. The missile shield negates Russian nuclear advantage....except it's well not the best and can be swarmed over. Unfortunately it's not politically in vogue to be making a **** ton of nukes so they take a ding on it. Nukes can be used for offense, shields are for defense. Offensive capability is the crux of power projection and any attempt to undermine it, they will counter. Yes it is about oil (direct sales profits as well as underlying energy security for the EU as it is the basis of a stable economy) there is a reason why they care about ukraine - supplies into the Balkans and central europe. Russia exports their resources and there is a reason why Gazprom is owned largely if not all (I forget) owned by the Russian government. EU energy prices are huge profit makers and the EU can't go elsewhere particularly for natural gas. Maybe American liquid natural gas terminals can supply a portion but certainly not all and certainly not right now. This is a tangled Web and the baltics down to the red Sea and over to central Asia is the triangle of political power. Be as far forward into the other's base so as to have as much power. That being said, it's easier to do things on your borders than 5k miles away |
