The earlier hardware revisions were plagued with problems, especially the RROD (Red Ring of Death). My son has had his about a 1.5 years now and has many hundreds of hours on it between the whole family, and it's been trouble-free.

Yeah, but most of that was heat related on the older models. If you want to play in the cold as they did, it should be fine :)
