Senator Stevens (R - Alaska) Indicted

McClatchy Washington Bureau | 07/29/2008 | Alaska's Sen. Ted Stevens indicted by federal grand jury

Always heard this guy was a cock sucker. Wonder what he did?

From CBS News: Sen. Ted Stevens Indicted, Alaska Republican Faces Seven Count Indictment For False Statements In Federal Corruption Probe - CBS News

Quote:

Stevens faces seven counts of false statements involving VECO, the oil services company in Alaska, and the renovations done on his home.
From Reuters: UPDATE 1-US Sen. Stevens of Alaska faces criminal charges | Markets | Markets News | Reuters

Quote:

The U.S. Justice Department has scheduled a news conference for 1:20 p.m. to make an announcement "regarding a significant criminal matter."

A federal law enforcement official said the news conference would discuss the criminal charges against Stevens. The 28-page indictment outlining the charges against Stevens was released by the Justice Department right before the news conference. (Reporting by James Vicini, Editing by David Alexander)
From Bloomberg: Bloomberg.com: Worldwide

Quote:

Stevens, a Republican, was charged with seven counts of making false statements on his Senate financial disclosure forms from 1999 to 2006 about gifts and renovations on his house.

Stevens ``knowingly and willfully engaged in a scheme to conceal'' his receipt of ``hundreds of thousands of dollars'' of gifts from Veco Corp., an oil-field engineering firm, and its chief executive officer, the indictment said.

The gifts included improvements on a home in Alaska, new vehicles, furniture and a professional Viking gas grill, according to the court papers.

About time they actually did something rather than leak that they might do something.

Our tubes can breathe freely.

He just called us stupid for thinking that global oil prices will be dramatically impacted by drilling in ANWAR. Maybe he can go into more detail writing a book while in prison.

Good. That guy is a ****ing *******.

TseTse 07-29-2008 13:18

fartiusstinkius 07-29-2008 13:27

What about the natural gas pipeline that is to be built down through Alaska instead of east over to Canada and then hooking up with an existing gas pipeline? I think it's supposed to cost twice as much to go through Alaska, but Alaska wanted it there only because of the jobs it would create. Anybody know how that panned out?

this is the best you can do?

oil prices arent set domestically. the only solution to our dependence on a finite fossil fuel is to focus on alternative energy sources like nuclear energy, wind, etc.

No, its not the only solution, its part of a broader set of solutions. You see it as black and white - mccain is for drilling, obama is for alternative energy. That's incorrect. Mccain is for BOTH, obama is solely for alternative sources.

And here's the thing - you think drilling will take a long time? Ok, lets

a) develop a new source of fuel
b) make it commercially sound (aka bring down the price from 100k to 5k, mass produce it)
c) develop the infrastructure to support it (new gas stations?)
d) replace all our current cars, trucks, buses, power plants, industry, etc with these new inventions

ok, that should only take 50+ years. 25-30 at best.

What do we do in the meantime? Obama can't help you there. Mccain might.

Are you suggesting that the US govt subsidize gasoline for citizens?

Are you truly naive enough to think opening oil drilling off-shore in florida or up in alaska is going to lower our ****ing gas prices? Seriously? Are you really that much of a propaganda tool?

The price of oil is set within a global marketplace, triple.

Instead of falling prey to the worst lobbyists and pork spenders (like Stevens), we need to focus on building nuclear plants, wind technologies and solar technologies for much wider scale implementation. Drilling for more oil merely extends our dependency on it rather than getting serious about the future.

This isnt nearly as far off in the future as you want to pretend.
