exactly this. also helps to show people just how devastating tsunamis are. remember when the thailand one hit and they said the water receded and people went out onto the beach because they didn't know what was happening? The more videos and awareness shown, the better it is for everyone.

i believe they should also show dead bodies from war on tv. it remind people that '**** is real'

I hope that you will all find something new to talk about besides the misfortune that is occurring over here.

You are all festering and feeding on the latest news of radioactive horror like bloated fatties wolfing down buttered popcorn in a movie theater.

Most of everything that you are reading in the news and all that you know about what is happening in Japan is a complete and utter crock of ignorant ****.

I can easily say that this event has been blown out of proportion with a degree of hysteria that I have never witnessed before in my life.

That last video of the women screaming to her death while the water carried her house away was just gross and unsettling.

Isn't anyone ashamed about how we are acting? Waiting for the next exciting clip of innocent people dying in agony and calling it "news".

**** this thread.

Sorry to have offended you, but it is news.
We don't know if that woman was in the house that was swept away, or if it was someone in the building that the guy was filming from.

Witnessing the power of mother nature like that is awe inspiring.
Watching the videos and witnessing the destruction gives a far better idea of what the people are going through, and simply dismissing it as entertainment is not the right thing to do.

The way this thread has to be updated with the tiniest inkling of barely relevant information constantly is bizarre, particularly when we know 99% of it is speculation and hype. I guess its some weird kind of voyeurism, or boredom.

Hey I just keep a hand around it at all times and if the ground starts shaking I'm not responsible for what happens next.

A little extra radiation won't hurt you, it might even give you superpowers.

The nuclear plant stuff is compelling for several reasons:
* The situation has changed in ways that were not anticipated in the first couple of days, and there's still a great deal of uncertainty about how it will end up.

* There's a small but not zero chance of things worsening to the point where this event will have direct environmental or health consequences in the U.S.

* We have nuclear plants too, and this event raises concerns about their safety. We respect the competence of Japan, so we suspect that our level of disaster preparedness does not far exceed that of the Japanese.

* We've been having discussions about building more nuclear plants here, and this event may well influence U.S. energy policy for decades.

At California Nuclear Plant, Earthquake Response Plan Not Required

Quote:

Though experts warned from the beginning that the plant would be vulnerable to an earthquake, asserting 25 years ago that it required an emergency plan as a condition of its license, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission fought against making such a provision mandatory as it allowed the facility to be built.
Oh they have an earthquake response plan.

Spoiler

If it has the same effect the 3 Mile Island meltdown had, that really would be a shame. At least they already extend the operating license TMI-1 for another 20 years through 2034 back in 2009.

**** this thread.

Sucks, but this is big news. The nuclear 'threat' overtook the fact that probably around 15,000 people died in the earthquake + tsunami because events like this don't happen all that often. Sure there are accidents every now and then but not an ongoing possibility of nuclear disaster.

The problem lies with the media over-hyping certain things like what Monkey_b wrote about a 'radiation cloud', that was a story ran by the NY Times that an anti-nuclear organization came up with.

There have been a lot of experts on American media that are either pro-nuclear (everything is ok, nothing is wrong) or anti-nuclear (meltdown, Chernobyl, area inhabitable for decades) and the truth lies somewhere in the middle of those two extremes.

There has also been a lot of conflicting information coming from TEPCO (owner of the plant), Edano (gov't spokesman), and the Japanese nuclear and industrial safety agency. It doesn't help when they intentionality dodge questions, or answer questions in an 'uncertain' manner. It makes it seem like they are hiding something or they really don't know what's going on.
