A new explosion rocked Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex, sending a plume of smoke into the air and touching off fresh concerns of radioactive leak in Japan.

Ahh, this is another new blast. And the Navy is getting out of the way of the clouds?

That's the same #3 explosion that I've already mentioned several times now, just a different picture. Again, containment vessel not breached, radiation detection equipment not screaming.

Apocalypse hasn't happened yet.

March 2011 Stories -- Commander, U.S. 7th Fleet

Quote:

The U.S. 7th Fleet has temporarily repositioned its ships and aircraft away from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant after detecting low level contamination in the air and on its aircraft operating in the area.

The source of this airborne radioactivity is a radioactive plume released from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. For perspective, the maximum potential radiation dose received by any ship***8217;s force personnel aboard the ship when it passed through the area was less than the radiation exposure received from about one month of exposure to natural background radiation from sources such as rocks, soil, and the sun.

The ship was operating at sea about 100 miles northeast of the power plant at the time.

Using sensitive instruments, precautionary measurements of three helicopter aircrews returning to USS Ronald Reagan after conducting disaster relief missions near Sendai identified low levels of radioactivity on 17 air crew members. The low level radioactivity was easily removed from affected personnel by washing with soap and water. They were subsequently surveyed, and no further contamination was detected.

As a precautionary measure, USS Ronald Reagan and other U.S. 7th Fleet ships conducting disaster response operations in the area have moved out of the downwind direction from the site to assess the situation and determine what appropriate mitigating actions are necessary.
Rest in peace brave sailors.

The steam is due to intentional venting. This happened a while ago. It is extremely minor radiation. You could live in Denver for like a year and get the same amount of radiation due to cosmic radiation exposure. The movement of vessels is precautionary because people act precautionary about these sorts of things.

In other news, if you wanna make a buck off of this I suggest buying as many iodine tablets as you can and selling them to freaked out Californians at marked up prices.

The second explosion came soon after a large aftershock which measured over 6.0 in magnitude. Grey smoke can now be seen rising from the Fukushima plant. The live shot of reactor #3 appears to show only the shell of the outer containment remaining. The status of the inner shell can not be ascertained from the far away aerial shot. The New York Times quotes Japanese officials as saying that a second explosion did occur at the factor. According to Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary the explosion at reactor #3 was likely similar to that at reactor #1. Officials at the nuclear plant say that the nuclear reactor container or "inner shell" was likely not damaged.

Reactor #3 is considered the more dangerous of the two as it contains plutnonum, whereas reactor #1 only contained uranium. The mixed-feul reactor has more potential to cause environmental damage if their containment device for the reactor is breached.

The condition of the reactor is not ascertainable, so let's just assume it's fine.

Caution always beats government reassurances.
